Sounds like we're planning on Jordan being our #7 next year with this deal. I have no problems with that.

With the run-up to the draft the way I see the pairings is:

Faulk/XXX
Hainsey/Murphy
Liles/Jordan or Biega or plug in a surprise

Maybe flip-flop Murphy and Liles (especially given his late season play).

My recollection is that Jordan played pretty well, only made a few mistakes (which, however always seemed to lead to good chances against), and was tasked with many times covering for his partners' mistakes.

That being said, I was quite impressed with Biega and have an inkling that the club was as well.

Not thrilled with the idea of giving a borderline NHL guy a 1-way deal. Seems like you'd rather have that flexibility. Price is nice though. Can't beat 625k.

Well, you can beat $625k, but not by enough to care about.

I'd have liked to see a 2 year, 2 way deal, but a one year at all of 75k over league minimum is fine.

Again, it's not the money that's the issue here. It's the one-way deal. Luckily it's only one year, but still would have preferred to see a two-way.

Given the current makeup of our D, and any other stopgap options out there, I'd venture to guess Jordan will not be in the press box too many nights. Making a mountain out of a mole hill.

i disagree. he was healthy scratched six times after the trade deadline despite no sekera and gleason and with hillen injured. he'll be in the press box regularly unless the hurricanes elect to sign nobody at all.

Based on the timing of this I'd venture to guess a Europen team offered him a decent contract and the only way to get him to stay was offering him a one way deal.

Many fringe guys get 2 ways with a decent amount guaranteed so if he spent the entire year in the AHL the most savings there giving up is about $400k. And with this crew on D, he's not spending that much time in the minors, if any.

If I'm not mistaken, Jordan is no longer exempt from waivers.

Say we sign him to a 1-year, $625K, 2-way contract and then attempt to send him down. There's a decent chance that he gets scooped up and we lose him for nothing, because there are plenty of teams out there who would benefit from having a spare defenseman on a tiny contract. So his being sent back to Charlotte this season seems pretty unlikely. And that's not really a problem, since he's filling a necessary role (pressbox/injury sub) at nearly minimum salary.

Since he's at a career stage where we either use him or lose him, the fact that it's a one-way deal seems a bit academic. Yes it's a concession beyond what was absolutely necessary, but in all likelihood it will end up being irrelevant at best or a trivial liability at worst.

he was waiver eligible the last two seasons and cleared both times

i don't see why that would change

I don't know how (or care to learn) to quote Twitter but Jordan said something about making tough decisions. As an RFA all he could be talking about is a more lucrative offer in Europe. That's why he got the one-way money.

If you want to argue they should have let him walk, that's fine, but I don't think he was coming back on a 2 way deal.

He's improved over the past couple of seasons. As far as waiver claims are concerned, there's a difference between claiming a prospect (who would then have to be inserted into your lineup) versus a dirt-cheap guy who can play at the NHL level. I mean, he's no stud, but he's an asset at that price point.

I know we're in the minority of thinking they're close, but do you really think throwing $1M+ at a guy will make much of a difference in the bottom pairing vs. using that extra money on a #2/3?

I just worry some prospect is going to get called up and play well, and end up having to go back to the AHL because Jordan/Liles/Whoever all have 1 way deals that the roster is stuck with.
