I played defense most of my hockey life at a really low level but I was always aware of who was on the ice (or floor as most of my experience is in ball hockey) against me as i had different strategies for different players.

Which is often code for "late hit".

I've seen way worse, but i think that hit was intended to injure. Sure, it would've been totally legal decades ago, but the game is changing away from that type of play.
