We need Murray to step up and be an asset for us. Because otherwise his contract is immovable.

Not a super unpalatable buyout.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to pay a guy 15M over the next two seasons to be a backup.

There were quite a few goalies on the market the year we acquired Murray. I was surprised we picked him and gave him the contract that we did. There were lots of threads on the goaltender options on multiple team's boards. Oh well.

I agree. Would be good if he has a decent stretch and we could find a team to trade him to. Looks like Gus is going to be our starter & #1 goalie of the future.

Meh, you can buy him out in summer 22. Not the worst thing in the world to have him backing up next season and giving Gus some cushion

I guess you mean summer 23?

I don't see how you benefit by keeping him an extra year. In that scenario you pay him 7M to backup plus 5.33M over two years to buy out the final season of his contract. Why bother? At that point you've paid him 82% of his salary anyway - may as well just ride out the whole deal and avoid the needless dead cap.

If you buy him out this summer you pay him 10M over 4 years. It's a massive up front savings. Even if you have to go out and spend 1.5-2.0M on a guy like David Rittich to backup Gustavsson, you still save a ton of money - which could be reallocated to a different need - and you probably improve your team.

Some people can't wait to "get rid" of Murray but if it happens, the team will right away have to "overpay" another goalie on the UFA market or make a trade (hopefully not give up more assets)

The problem is this team is not even remotely close to solid enough defensively to leave Gustavsson (and/or Sogaard) with all the pressure. I mean, he was pretty solid on monday but still gave up 6 goals FCS... Do people realize that? I have been a goalie for decades, I know how it feels. No matter how hard you stand on your head but you get so dominated that you still get wrecked in the end, it's really frustrating

It could be a similar situation to Bobby Ryan buy out ($1,833,333 x 4 years) plus Evgeni Dadonov ($5,000,000 AAV), and in the end it wasn't even an upgrade (Bobby actually had a better scoring pace on the 2nd worst offense in the NHL. Ottawa was 19th)

So for the first 2 years, Bobby Ryan would have been 7.25 and Evgeni Dadonov 6.8

Murray's buyout cost seems to be 2.5 per for several years. It's a cost you'll have to add to the player replacing him. None of Sogaard, Mandolese or Merilainen will be NHL ready, not even close

INVEST on f***ing defense instead. People are always proposing to make moves for goalies and forwards when the AINEC team weakness has been DEFENSE for years.

he's here, we're not close to competing yet. just let it ride and at worst you have an expensive AF backup with experience.

I am not for trading Murray or trying to buy him out. It would be a ridiculous idea. He's got a few more years left on his contract. We need to ride it out. If we make the playoffs and he is acting as backup, he could go on another one of those runs.

The mistake was the initial contract and Melnyk will have to pay that bill no matter what. Considering Murray struggles with constant injuries the last few years and a few up and down seasons since his initial elite success, it was too much of a gamble to give up a contract like that, too much for too long. Particularly since we're not even providing him with a proper defense. Another lack of foresight.

What I don't really understand is why we have no problem throwing money at guys like Murray, Tkachuk, White, Dadonov, Zack Smith, Burrows and Condon but not to guys like DeMelo and Duclair? God knows that we could have used them all this time.

* Edit : I need to specify that there's nothing wrong with giving money to Tkachuk, we had no choice and even if he's overpaid he's worth a lot of money

Murray isn’t a starting NHL goalie - at least for this team he is not.

complete failure of a trade. Murray was brought in to stabilize and he’s fallen completely flat on his face. Still doesn’t have a win this season. Unimaginable

Cost the goalie coach his job. Will cost the coach his job too

His contract will be over when we miraculously make the playoffs in 4-5 years

Yeah, not looking good for Murray after DJ’s comments in post game presser.

This guy just can't get wins it seems. To his credit he is playing behind a very bad team, but he still needs to perform better than he has.

Gonna be interesting to see where this all goes from here.

"I just think we’ve got to get someone to take the net and start to win us some games when we give that effort."

Sounds like he's calling out the goaltending in general, not Murray specifically.
