I'd agree we have to take back salary but if Yandle puts up another 50+pt season, there will be teams interested if they have some young D that don't need protection from expansion draft. Don't think Yandle is viewed as a cap dump, he plays every game and still does his job as a PPQB but needs to be sheltered 5 on 5.

Maybe COL? Go with Girard, Yandle and Byram as their LD. They probably only need to protect Girard, Makar (not sure if he meets requirements for protection) and possibly Johnson while exposing Cole. They would have Makar, Johnson and Timmins on the right side.

Yandle for Zadorov with some filler seems like a good move for both. COL is currently at 17th in PP.
Yandle's deal expires same year Mack needs a new deal.
Yandle is a PP specialist but a defensive liability. Even if he would wave his NMC, I can’t see many teams being interested unless a sweetener was included.

Maybe someone would take him, but it wouldn’t be the Avs. The PP is hurting with Rantanen/Landy being out, but will be fine once they get back. Also, Avs want Makar to qb PP1 and wouldn’t be able to maximize Yandle’s best assets (see Barrie, Tyson and Mike Babcock).

The Avs aren’t married to Zads although I don’t think theres any way we trade him this year. I think a Yandle for Zads swap is heavily in favor of the cats, but regardless, don’t think it’s a good deal for either team and would make each team worse off. Zads just isn’t what the Cats need.

I’d friggin love Zadarov if that was any kind of a possibility. (Yes I just read above, but imo that’s where Borgstrom would come in.

I just don’t think he has much value at all right now due to his play all last season and at the start of this one, and I can see Borgstrom being moved as well, but I think it would be for a much better defenseman should he be added.
I was high on him, but I see him going the way of Gudbranson in that he’s not that effective. Terrific wheels and size, just disappointed with him and am finding with moving him for a more imposing shutdown guy.
So far as Yandle, you’re right with his pairing and PP time, but he’s great as a QB and I don’t mind him. Him being loved does free up a ton of space, and he’s not a Tallon signee.

That's my point though, Matheson doesn't hold much value so trading him would cost a sweetener because of the last year he had and money owed. Hence, Yandle putting up another big season with 3 years left may/should draw more interest or cost less to move if we have to add. Just don't see Matheson moved, there is still upside there and we have one of the best coaches in the league, give him the year under Q.

Boyle is a 1 year stopgap for Borgstrom, there is some concern he may not be a top 6 player but still early to ship him off imo. Let him fill out and play two full pro seasons, he's played 33 AHL games, 9 goals, 27 pts and 54 NHL games with 8 goals and 18pts. That's one full pro year between two leagues and his numbers aren't that bad.
We finally have prospect depth developing in the AHL and don't need to rush them. Just remember Barkov was defense first and is now flying on offense, Borgstrom was all offense and now learning defense first, not comparing skill level but I do see some similarities in their game.

LD prospects in Gildon, Stillman, Kolyachonok and Ludvig all have good defensive strength to their game, first two are fighting for a spot next year and the latter two are probably 2 years away. If we trade, maybe trade our 2020/2021 1st+ (probably have to include Pysyk) + pick/mid level forward prospect for a defensive defenseman with 2 years left?
The expansion draft may complicate things as we will now likely protect Ekblad, Weegar (assuming he gets a 4-5 year deal) and Matheson as it's unlikely he's moved. Even if Matheson is moved, Yandle needs protection unless he waives as well.

Either of those 1st's will probably be 3-4 years away from making an NHL impact anyhow, although we should draft some RD and C this year. I agree with the need for a defensive defenseman but don't see a trade possible, for what you're offering, that makes it an upgrade in return. Sorry for the verbal diarrhea.

What type of sweetener would be needed? Subban seems like a bit of a comparable?

Good point with Makar on the 1st PP unit, hence the trade of Barrie. Moving Yandle would be in the off-season if for Zadorov. Why do you say Z isn't what the Cats need, have seen you on the FLA boards and you do know a fair bit about the team.

Maybe MON and BOS are two other teams that would be interested in Yandle?
Even if both reside in same division as FLA.
MON is hurting for a puck moving LD and have a mid pack PP

BOS may lose Chara to retirement (does he plan on playing one more year?) and Krug is a free agent (any contract talk there yet?) Will he take a discount or price himself out long term? I do know he said he was excited about a new deal/contract talks in October.
Yandle deal ends the same time Pasta needs a new deal. Could replace the PP points lost to Krug?
Wouldn't be surprised if Yandle is kept beyond this year in FLA and then asked to waive his NMC for expansion draft though.

I’ve lived in Sofla basically my whole life so I’m a big Cats fan (lived in Bobby Clarke’s old house actually), just (weirdly) a die hard Avs fan. So that’s why I know so much about the Cats.

Really funny you said that about Subban because after my last post I thought about the Subban deal and tried to compare. The thing is with Yandle, he really is atrocious defensively and a one-trick pony now (albeit a good one). He’s only going to get worse as he ages and at $6.35m for the next 3 years, I’m not sure many teams would jump at that and/or have the cap space to do that. Remember Marleau wasn’t terrible last year and only had 1yr left on his deal, and the leafs still had to give up a first.

But from an Avs perspective, yandle doesn't fit the team from an age, skill set, contract or need perspective. His contract has negative value to the Avs at least, and with the Avs being a contender there’s nothing the panthers would be willing to part with that the Avs would accept. Throw Zads on top and the only guy the Avs would accept is Huberdeau in a larger deal, which doesn’t work for the Cats.

Which brings me to Z. Z is a monster that opposing teams fear and one of the relatively few big hitters left in the game. But he’s got some serious flaws, including routinely making boneheaded plays/decisions and lapses leading to goals against. He gets in Bednar’s doghouse to the point where he was scratched for a game earlier this season, so just imagine Q. That’s not what the Panthers need and I don’t think he’ll lower the teams GAA but that much. Cats need a real shutdown defenseman that can be relied upon in big spots.

I also agree with your take on Matheson btw, and think/hope he’s going to bounce back. Panthers would be better off keeping him but I wouldn’t want to give up anything to get rid of him. Fact is though, I don’t think the team can continue to carry $11m in 2 offensive dmen that are defensive liabilities.

Yandle I guess could fit on Mon/Bos but I feel like panthers would have to retain $$ in any deal, and don’t think Yandle is going to waive anyway.

Marleau had a good 4-5 years on Yandle no? For some reason, Yandle just never misses a game. It's unbelievable but understandable when he avoids contact for the most part, big reason for his defensive flaws.
He looked horrible to start the year but has now exploded offensively again. Guess you can say the starts for him may be more sluggish but at 33, there's still gas in the tank. Maybe the last year of the deal would be the scary one but he hasn't shown signs yet.

The defenseman you're describing is only acquired through draft-develop or offering up Huberdeau or Trocheck++.
I'd like to see Zadorov with Weegar on 2nd pairing even though Weegar has looked great playing his off-side with Ekblad on top pair. Feel they would feed off each other's physical play and help clear out front when we have our weaker forward lines on.

I don't view Matheson as a pure offensive defenseman but he should be allowed to rush the puck more or feed him in stride, it's really impressive to watch him skate. He usually curls behind the net and nobody is waiting there for the prime scoring chance out front because he's so quick. If Yandle was moved, I'd probably try Matheson there but Weegar or Ekblad are still fine options. Matheson is our only defenseman with elite skating, the rest are slightly above average or just average.

Yandle would definitely waive for BOS, he'd retire at "home" but obviously Chara would need to retire or Krug moves on to even be a possibility.

Listen the best ability is availability. It’s great and impressive Yandle’s so durable. But you only want him on the ice for the 3-4 mins a game he plays on the PP. He’s a liability the rest of the time.

In terms of what the panthers need, yes they do need the shutdown dman, but I’m not necessarily meaning a top 5 Dman in the league. Panthers just don’t have that guy they can send out there.

I think Savard, Murray, Alec Marintinez and other options out there are better fits for the panthers than Z is. I actually think a guy like Patrick Nemeth would be a great target for the Cats that shouldn’t cost too much in assets.

Q is doing a good job of hiding him on the 3rd pairing and he's a +5 right now and 5 on 5 is +3 in GF/GA but yes his giveaways and soft play leave you wanting more defensively.

Think Tallon is hoping Q can turn Matheson (a #4 right now) into a #2D if he puts it all together. Ekblad is a #2, Weegar is a #4 playing as a #2 and Stralman is a #4 as well. A #2/3 shutdown LD would be great to take some pressure off Matheson but how many teams are offering that up right now? Tallon has hinted at it so curious if he waits until trade deadline or rolls the dice in the off-season. Q will have a lot of say and is still shaking the etch-a-sketch every couple games.

Pysyk as a 3rd line winger and Weegar as a top pair guy shows that Q is willing to switch things up.
Murray would be a great add, not sure of the cost though. Good chat, cheers!

Well we know he's physical. And he's young. If he plays decent D. Yes, we need him. I certainly wouldn't be upset with a Yandle for Zadorov swap.
