Legitimate question: What is the criteria for voting if there's no illness, sad stories, or old people?
I mean look up previous winners of the trophy. There are many cases of winners overcoming family matters, personnel illnesses, injuries, bounce-back/late break out seasons seasons, career dedication, leadership, and a bunch of different ones such as Doug Jarvis for consecutive games played.

There isn't a set criteria obviously, but as the number of players increase in the NHL (up to 32 teams soon) there are going to be more injuries and illnesses so it's not surprising to see those players being nominated and awarded the Masterton more often than not.

David Backes should have been nominated.

Backes only had half his gut removed and got himself back on the ice a month later. Shoulda had the whole thing, then he'd have made this list.

Backes was Boston's nominee but wasn't selected as a finalist.

Here's the full slate of who was nominated by each team:

Anaheim - Andrew Cogliano
Arizona - Jakob Chychrun
Boston - David Backes
Buffalo - Kyle Okposo
Calgary - Matt Stajan
Carolina - Jordan Staal
Chicago - Jeff Glass
Colorado - Carl Soderberg
Columbus - Zach Werenski
Dallas - Mattias Janmark
Detroit - Niklas Kronwall
Edmonton - Adam Larsson
Florida - Roberto Luongo
Los Angeles - Dustin Brown
Minnesota - Matt Cullen
Montreal - Antti Niemi
Nashville - Auston Watson
New Jersey - Brian Boyle
New York Islanders - Josh Bailey
New York Rangers - Chris Kreider
Ottawa - Mark Borowiecki
Philadelphia - Claude Giroux
Pittsburgh - Kris Letang
San Jose - Joe Thornton
St. Louis - Carter Hutton
Tampa Bay - Steven Stamkos
Toronto - Roman Polak
Vancouver - Derek Dorsett
Vegas - Brad Hunt
Washington - Devante Smith-Pelly

I know. I just find a couple of the finalist choices, lacking. There are at least a couple others, in addition to Backes, whom IMO are more worthy of it.
