Attended the Red Wings camp a couple of years ago. This is what they said.

Ty Stanton - The 6-foot-4, 176 pound defenseman is a two way blueliner who has big frame but is extremely thin at 176 pounds. Stanton was passed over in the 2013 NHL draft after finishing the season as the 78th ranked North American prospect according to the Central Scouting Bureau. The Red Wings are loaded on the blueline with a number of emerging young defensemen on the horizon so the odds are stacked against Stanton.

Making Maricin look like a body builder.

Seems funny to be adding another d-man to our already crowded d core.

The kid was highly touted, but a concussion in his draft year scared teams off. He could be a good risk-reward candidate.

Brendan Miller was the one CHLer we brought in on an AHL deal from last year's group on defense, and while he was not spectacular in the ECHL, he was far above the others (Nicastro, Bell, etc.) we brought in (besides Holl and Kolomatis). Plus he did solid considering the crap Solar Bears team. Still unlikely to be brought back, but his potential was well worth it and we should continue to pick up younger guys on AHL deals instead of older guys.

Stanton is a good start, but as a LHD, the Leafs should look towards RH defensemen. As it stands right now, it looks like we will have 7 LH defensemen on the Marlies next year.

We needed depth on the Marlies for next year. A lot of graduations will happen and Campbell, Valiev and Loov will likely be the only ones to remain. Add Desrocher, Dermott and Nielsen and you still only have 6 defensemen at that level.

Crowded core of ECHL defensemen? Aside from Percy and Holl the marlies are pretty weak defensively. Brennan is more of a forward who plays the point and Loov is injured. They won't get past the first round of the playoffs with the defense they are playing now.
