What has he been doing?

Pull up a chair, there's a story here. Ray Emery was on a PTO with the Los Angeles Kings' AHL affiliate the Ontario Reign. Entering preseason, the Reign had prospects J.F. Berube and Patrik Bartosak slated to share goaltending duties for the Reign. However, Berube got plucked off waivers by the New York Islanders and Bartosak injured his thumb, needing surgery. Peter Budaj and Ray Emery were signed to be the interim starting and backup goalies, respectively, until Bartosak was able to come back. But then came a sad and bizarre twist of events. Bartosak, sent to the ECHL Manchester Monarchs on a four-day conditioning assignment, got arrested in New Hampshire on domestic violence charges, effectively taking himself out of a future with the Kings. The Kings, having traded their former backup goalie Martin Jones at the trade deadline, were left with one goalie prospect in their entire system, one Alec Dillon of the Edmonton Oil Kings. Management decided that since the AHL is a development league, they couldn't use up both goalie spots on vets. Coach Stothers had to release Emery from his PTO and hope he could find a spot on another team, and 23 year-old Michael Houser from the ECHL got the call to pack some flip-flops because he was headed to sunny Ontario, California to be Budaj's backup.

That's more plot twists than a season of Fargo has.

Oven then stomach
Now Nylander might be able to box against someone other than Clune. :sarcasm:

But still... This is a good signing for both parties, especially when you look a little deeper into his stats you'll see he was playing for the Flyers who are pretty hit or miss amongst goaltenders. He might even find his game back while on the Marlies.

Perhaps he'll be Tim Thomasesque - that'd be good. Perhaps not!.

Looking back at his numbers, he once had okay numbers.

2010 - 10 with the Ducks SV% .926
2012 - 21 games with Hawks SV% 922
2012 - 1.94 GAA shared Jenning's trophy with Crawford for best GAA in the league.

So, he has played at the NHL level - at least for a short while here and there.

I can remember him a bit. But, don't remember much about this style. I think he's a bit more of a standup goalie than today's butterfliers iirc.

You don't remember him in Ottawa. I always thought he was a solid backup.

Look like goalies are cursed for the Leafs - now here is the long term solution for the Leafs

Now that's what you call service with a smile :D

Just keep the trainers away from him if he starts throwing a temper tantrum. Wouldn't the Leafs be able to sign him to a PTO after this if Reimer is still out and he does well with this PTO for the Marlies?

Still remember Emery from his early days in Ottawa. He was a Leafs fan growing up

Must be nice for him to get a chance to play close to home.

They should have just kept Christopher Gibson. Of all the trash they threw out in the Grabner trade he's probably the most likely to be a decent asset. The Leafs didn't have nearly enough goaltending depth to justify dumping him for no reason. The guy is posting some stellar numbers for Bridgeport.

Before this season: Bernier looked like a starter, Reimer as the backup.

Bibeau was a backup last season to Gibson and needed more minutes, Sparks put up good AHL and outstanding ECHL numbers, showing he also needs more AHL starts.

Who was going to go to the ECHL out of Bibeau/Gibson/Sparks?

Well, Gibson was the starter last year, so it stands to reason the other two would have needed to actually earn a job first. Bibeau is terrible this season.

Last season it seemed as if the Leafs saw Bibeau as a guy with high potential, and Sparks was unreal and deserved AHL starts.

It was Bibeau (they prob saw him as having the highest potential), our own pick Sparks who had a good season, and Gibson who also had a good season but was released by LA and now Toronto for basically nothing.

Imo the best asset we gave up in that deal was Nilsson, but I doubt he makes it to the NHL as anything more than a #6D. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson becomes a backup, much like Bibeau and Sparks can.
