Just think, we could have have Justin Faulk over Visentin. Imagine an OEL - Faulk pairing

Out for the season.... He suffered an ankle injury during Coyotes training camp and attempted to rehab the injury. He was unsuccessful and had surgery before Christmas. He's just getting off the walking boot and may start skating in within the next four weeks.

So the question is...is domingue, visentin, langhammer, or Burke the future of coyotes goaltending?

I noticed Visentin dressed for Portland a few nights ago, although just as the backup.

It was a typo. Leggio was listed as a defenseman so they couldn't list him as a goaltender and the system automatically took Visentin.

Visentin is out for the season. He's still not skating.

Why the hell wasn't Visentin qualified? 1st rd pick goaltender from just a few years ago. Goalies take time to develop.

Honestly believe his ankle is irreparable, at least from an athlete standpoint. I've never heard of any sort of ankle injury - even most severe - taking a year to recover.

This was the first pick Burke heavily influenced, right? Wonder if they didn't qualify him as either a favor or as a way to distance themselves.

To be fair.... He attempted to rehab it, but it wasn't responding so he made the decision to have surgery around Christmas. He was only getting on the ice when the Pirates season ended in April. I really thought he'd be qualified to at least give him a shot to redeem himself. Keep him on a short leash for one year and if he falters Yotes walk away next year.

A team will take a flyer on him.

Mike Lee on the other hand.... His injury was gruesome and he's lucky to even be walking again let alone playing.

Don't wast a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick on a goalie. Just wait until they're already fully developed and then trade a 3rd rounder for them.

My knee jerk was to agree, so I pulled up all the 1st Rd goalies since 2000. I consider anyone who was able to hold down a starting job as a hit. Goalies are 12 for 26 (I excluded Samsonov)...actually better than I expected. The crazy thing is we've only had 27 goalies selected in the 1st round in the last 16 years. So I think most teams are employing this strategy. Now of the "hits", the ones who really benefited the team that drafted them are Dipietro (of course they paid for it several times over), Ward, Lehtonen, Fleury, Schneider (kinda...fetched a 1st rd pick), Price, Varlamov (nice haul when traded too)

2nd round goalies are worse. As hits I get: Bryz (kinda), Howard, Crawford, Pavelec backups/some potential: Ellis, Budaj, Harding, Neuvirth, Enroth, Markstrom, Allen, Lehner...out of 37 drafted 2000-2012 (prob too soon to gauge 2013-2015). Howard, Crawford, and Pavelec significantly helped the team that drafted them.

3rd round: Anderson, Greiss, Bishop, Quick, Mason....out of 44 drafted. Quick is the only one who significantly helped the team that drafted him.

So since 2000, we have about 11 draftees in the 1st 3 rounds who turned out to be worth the investment out of 107 drafted...about a 10% success rate.

Further, if you look at the top 15 goalies in save percentage this year, only 3 of them were 1st-3rd rd picks AND are still playing for the team that drafted them. Soooo, yeah you should probably just draft a goalie late if at all.

There's a lot of successful goalies in that list but the sheer number of them taken nosedives after 2006. Changes in the talent pool and philosophy account for that.

If there's a goalie a GM thinks is a first round talent is out there he will draft one. But more so because of how long they take to develop it still might be better to take the forward you think is close ranking wise simply because he'll make an impact faster. In later rounds this isn't as much an issue since 3rd+ rounders aren't projected to contribute to the NHL club for at least 4 years in most cases. But even first round goalies generally have that same projection or longer. Where as your 1st/2nd round forward can start banging on the door after 2 years. Even mid-late ones like Perlini and Samuellson.

So its 50/50, just like with skaters, and i'd say a good lot of the elite goalies come out of the first round. But i'd bet its a lot better chance getting an elite goalie at the front of the draft than the back end.

Price, fleury, rask, dubnyk, schneider.
