He's given a top 4 role when he's actually in the lineup, which isn't very often.

No chance of him sticking around if the current coaching staff does.

This.

He's arguably our second best defenseman, or at least he was before he started to be constantly scratched. He played one game so far this season and was shaky, but honestly it wasn't worth being benched again. This coaching staff allows veterans to make mistakes with no accountability or consequence. They're constantly allowed to stay in the lineup.

Whats the general consensus? Do you guys see him sticking around? Also what type of defenseman do you see him as? Is he a guy that plays top 4?

he's the modern defensive defenseman. When given the chance to play, he can find a groove and perform well defensively. At times his shot can be effective, it's sort of like a floater.

He can do a fine job somewhere else. With this coaching staff, it's sort of impossible.

If I'm Mark, I'd leave....

....yesterday....

What Pete has done to him is absolutely unacceptable.

I mean...why bother showing up for Practice since he'll never play?

If I were a team with an injury to a top 4 defenseman or wanted to upgrade the 2nd pairing, I would be on the phone to Lou every day.

If the Devils don't appreciate him, I believe there are plenty of teams that would love to have him.

Almost any team in the league would welcome him into their defensive group somewhere. He's not and never will be a top pairing type guy, but is a super solid 4/5 type. Not great at anything but pretty good at everything.

Pete has really screwed the pooch on this one. No excuse for it. He's totally destroyed the young D men on this team. I just hope he's gone by the time Gelinas/Merrill/Severson get their shots.

If Devils D castoffs like Sheldon Brookbank can find a regular spot in an NHL lineup elsewhere, Fayne is about to become a very rich man.

Even Urbom found a job with the Caps as soon as he left. And how far down was he on our list...out 9th or 10th best d-man in the eyes of Deboer? BTW when is Fayne's contract up and will he be a RFA or UFA?

Fayne is a UFA after this season. He's as good as gone.

Edit: Ugh, looking at capgeek is so depressing - Anton Volchenkov our highest paid defenseman by a good margin, with Bryce Salvador #2. I already knew that, but still hurts the eyes to be reminded.

It's a mockery what we do to young rooks. I'd rather go with the young guns and have them develop, rather than be statuesque with veterans.

And it's not like Fayne is a rookie at all. He's a 26 year old guy in his prime that the organization developed and has already played a significant role. He has 171 regular season games and played in every single game for a team that made it to the SC finals - including 24 playoff games.

He is good he is being mis-used by Stevens and DeBoer.

He needs to sit back and wait for the money to come in as a UFA

I have always feared that when Lou finally left as GM, he was going to leave this organization totally stripped. I thought he had an excellent off-season bringing in guys like Schneider and Brunner and it was encouraging that there was talk of making space to bring up one of the young defenseman. I was under the impression that meant a guy like Urbom, Gelinas or Merrill, not rotating Larsson and Fayne as the 6th. Here we are 7 games into the season and I can already see the possibility of the worst case scenario playing out.

Larsson hasn't taken the next step. Actually, hes probably taken a step back at a point in his development we really ought to be seeing major progress. I hope he's a major part of our future but there's certainly some doubt creeping in about his ceiling.

One has to assume Fayne is going to leave as a UFA at the end of the season with the way he's been treated. This one is still the biggest head scratcher for me. He's been a major part of our defensive core when they had their most success under this head coach.

Urbom is gone. In the long run, that may not prove to be a big deal but I would still rather watch him make rookie mistakes than Volch or Salvidor.

We don't have a 1st round pick because of one of the most asinine asset management decisions ever

Josefson looked promising in preseason but hasn't been given much of a chance to do anything in favor a guys like Gionta

Schneider and Brunner see no reason to sign on long term at the end of next season. Then what do we have?

I don't get it, Lou has always said building a successful pro team is having a similar balance of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors contributing as you would have on a college team. Right now, it feels like a lot of the more talented freshman and sophs are sitting in favor of seniors who will be working a day job next year.

Fayne is a 2nd pairing defenseman on any team, and can fill in on the top pair occasionally when needed. This team has treated him like absolute **** since last season and I would be shocked if he doesn't walk at free agency.

The only way to keep him at this point is if we start playing him like he deserves to be played.

If you're Fayne, why the **** would you stay after this season IF Deboer is still roaming the bench? My god bes getting jerked around. Gets in the lineup, plays admirably, gets 20 mins of TOI, then is scratched for another 5 games to get Larsson back in.

He's gone and whoever signs him will appreciate him far more than the devils did. Terrible asset management by a team that is actually icing one of the worst defensive pairings I've ever seen.

This and the fact we have kids down in Albany ready to step in but Lou and Pete for reasons I can't imagine are married to slow, old and terrible veteran defensemen.

I wish somebody would have the guts to call Lou on this debacle as well (not holding my breath).

He is the GM (although I hope not for much longer). No chance I want Deboer or Stevens getting anywhere near our young defensive prospects as they come up. That's a recipe for disaster.

You known who might have called Lou and the Devils out on this mess but he's gone and everyone couldn't stand him - Neverson.
