Benning's biggest mistake, if you ask me, is that he completely misjudged his own team and also had poor pro scouting.

Contracts to Beagle, Sutter, Roussel, and Baertschi were crippling, had we not had those players signed to such long term contracts we would have easily had the salary cap space to retain both Toffoli and Tanev last offseason and even had money to spare. I don't give him a "pass" on Eriksson, but that contract was signed when they were trying to give the previous core of players some sort of final run. And, the Ferland contract had the potential to be a lot better as well.

Benning: "Hockey is a Business."

FAQ: "We are in the Entertainment Business."

But in instead, "Vancouver is a Village":

Things are bleak now but could get much bleaker still.

You have to imagine that the players are going to get bombarded by either Green questions, Clark questions, or management questions. I doubt they will dig too deep into real management questions because the media has no balls, though.

He's the worst GM in franchise history. I'm not sure how you can give him more than 0.

I mean, his "great drafting" netted us Virtanen and OJ with the two highest draft selections the club has had, since the Sedins. Is that good?

One thing I instantly recognized is how petty and vindictive this management group was to start. Pretty much discarding certain players due to their connection the previous regime. That was obvious in 2015-2016. To me, I have come to realize that Brackett's impending departure was probably why guys like Madden and Gaudette were reportedly being shopped in early 2020.

The season that got Gillis fired:

83 points in 82 games.

Benning has had but two seasons in seven years that beat that mark.

Dave Nonis never had a season where the team finished less than 0.500 (neither did Mike Gillis obviously).

It ain’t a high bar to beat unless you’re Jim Benning.
