Just finished it, pretty cool movie. I agree with those who said the overall scale is a bit simpler than another Pixar movies but the scenery was gorgeous and the characters/message were cool. Wish it was a little longer. Wouldn't be surprised to see it get a sequel.

Kids wanted to watch this so I ended up catching it with them. Not a bad movie at all. In most respects it’s a formulaic Disney/Pixar coming of age story. It’s reasonably funny, visually interesting, has a passable (if predictable) plotline. The Italian cultural setting is appealing. There’s some good messaging for kids about dealing with self-doubt and getting out of your own head.

Gorilla in the room is that they walk right up to the line of it being a coming-out story. The main character has an ill-defined attraction to both his primary male and female friends, and some minor side characters are presumptively a gay couple. But they never actually touch the line… nothing is said, the topic isn’t addressed, nothing “happens”, and the characters just kind of carry on. Apparently this treatment of the topic has been a source of controversy, with people being turned off for the usual polar-opposite reasons.

Saw it the other day. Decent but as an adult not as entertaining as some other Pixar movies.

Not something I'd want to dwell on too much but I think a lot of this is just people interposing their own interpretations on fictional characters. Before getting to the messy business of romantic relationships and identity the characters are simply kids, checking wiki aged 12, 14, and 13 respectively, who were previous alone but then find simple friendship. It's a juicy setup for fanfic writers and "polar-opposite" bickering but the simpler explanation is it's just about being friends. The way it ends seems more a push towards being adoptive siblings rather than romantic partners.

Very well said and something that has become the norm in the digital age. The line between opinion/fact becomes blurred.
