Kind of a fun idea I had for a thread

I only really started following prospects in 2003, so that's where I'll start, but others can go eariler if they like:

Ok so the game is you say who your team drafted, who you would have drafted then, and who you would draft now, with hindsight.

I've been tracking prospects since 1994. I'm going to start with that year, and end in 2001, because I don't think I can accurately judge 2002-05 yet. (Although there are some that I think I can form somewhat of a judgement on).

Vancouver Canucks

1994
Who we got: Mattias Ohlund
Who I wanted at the time: Alexander Kharlamov or Wayne Primeau
Who I'd want now: Ohlund. (I know, Elias is the best all-round LW in the league, but when your team winds up with the top defenceman in franchise history with a pick outside of the top 10, you don't complain).

1995
Who we got: Chris McAllistar. (2nd round pick. First round dealt to Buffalo in the Mogilny debacle).
Who I want: Peter Schaefer or Alyn McCauley
Who I'd want now: Miikka Kiprusoff. Yeah, McCauley's one of the most underrated players in the league, but how can you argue against the Kipper?

1996
Who we got: Josh Holden
Who I wanted at the time: Holden (Everyone thought it was a steal).
Who I'd want now: Derek Morris, Zdeno Chara or Daniel Briere. (Morris and Chara have been likely the two best players from the weak 1996, but Morris was ranked 85th by CSB in 1996 and Chara wasn't on anybody's radar screen. From the players available at 12 that were projected for the first two rounds, I'd have wanted Briere).

1997
Who we got: Brad Ferrence
Who I wanted at the time: Daniel Cleary. (Or anyone besides Ferrence, who I never liked).
Who I'd pick now: Hossa. (Not even close, although I am a big Morrow fan, and I had Morrow ahead of Ferrence).

1998:
Who we got: Bryan Allen
Who I wanted at the time: Malholtra
Who I'd pick now: Anyone of the remaining Big 3 from the Q that year: Richards, Tanguay or Gagne. (I guess Richards, but only because he has a Conn Smythe).

1999*:
Who we got: the Sedins.
Who I wanted: One of the twins
Who I'd take now: Havlat
(I asterisk this one because the Canucks traded up to ensure they'd get the twins. If not for that, they only pick at No. 3, and I was hoping at that time they'd get Henrik, since I thought Brendl and Daniel would go 1-2. If they could do just No. 3 over again, I'd say Havlat. But the Sedins will turn into two of the top 5-8 players from their weak draft year, so I'm not complaining).

2000:
Who we got: Nathan Smith
Who I wanted: Jared Aulin
Who I'd take now: Any one of the talented young defencemen (Kronwall, Martin, Schultz) drafted after Smith. Or Brian Sutherby.

2001:
Who we got: RJ Umberger
Who I wanted: I really wanted the Canucks to trade up and land Kobasew, but failing that, Mike Cammelleri or Carlo Colaiacovo.
WHo I'd take now: Colaiacovo, Cammelleri or Derek Roy.

Hab fans should be happy with Komisarek for years to come. He's rounding into a solid shut-down defenceman whose real value will be in the playoffs. He may not be as good as Hamhuis or Ruuttu, but if you get a really good player, you shouldn't be complaining.

I'd take Kesler over Richards, Bourdon over Kopitar, and definately Schneider over Green. We have no goaltending prospects and we've never taken a goalie in the first round. We need to develop a home-grown goalie and Schnieder or Ellis-Plante are our future.

I really like Allen but I'd have taken Gagne from that draft year. Or, if I was time-machine GM -- trade VCR's #4 for Colorado's #19 and #20 and pick Gagne and Richards :p
