Longest Trade Chain

Who can come up with the longest trade chain ?

Player A traded for B + C
Player C in turn traded for player D + draft pick
Player D traded for Player E
etc.

So player's E lineage can be traced back to player A. The length of the chain would
be the time from player A's first game to player E's last game.

(no allowing what draft picks turned out to be)

My first quick crack at something ...

1962-63 Terry Harper first NHL season

Terry Harper Traded from Los Angeles Kings with Dan Maloney and round 2 pick in the 1976 draft (Jim Roberts) to Detroit Red Wings for rights to Marcel Dionne and Bart Crashley

Marcel Dionne Traded from Los Angeles Kings with Jeff Crossman and round 3 pick in the 1989 draft to New York Rangers for Bobby Carpenter and Tom Laidlaw

Bobby Carpenter Traded from Los Angeles Kings to Boston Bruins for Steve Kasper

Steve Kasper traded from Los Angeles Kings with Steve Duchesne and round 4 pick in the 1991 draft (Aris Brimanis) to Philadelphia Flyers for Jeff Chychrun and Jari Kurri

Jeff Chychrun Traded from Los Angeles Kings with Brian Benning and round 1 pick in the 1992 draft (Jason Bowen) to Pittsburgh Penguins for Paul Coffey

Paul Coffey Traded from Los Angeles Kings with Sylvain Couturier and Jim Hiller to Detroit Red Wings for Gary Shuchuk, Marc Potvin and Jimmy Carson

Gary Shuchuk last season - 2003-04 Springfield Falcons

- that's a chain of just over 40 years

Does it still count if it the player moved on to another team, or do all the trades have to be from the same team?

Here's mine:

Andy Bathgate started his career in `52-`53

In `64, he was traded with Don McKenney from the Rangers to Toronto for Dick Duff, Rod Seiling, Bob Nevin, Arnie Brown and Bill Collins

In `75, Collins was traded with John Davidson from St. Louis to the Rangers for Ted Irvine, Bert Wilson and Jerry Butler

In '80, Butler was traded with Tiger Williams from Toronto to Vancouver for Bill Derlago and Rick Vaive

In `87, Vaive was traded with Steve Thomas and Bob McGill from Toronto to Chicago for Al Secord and Ed Olczyk

In `97, Olczyk was traded from L.A. to Pittsburgh for Glen Murray

Murray is still active today in 2007.

55 seasons.

Certainly not the longest in the NHL, but the best one for the Flyers.

January 31, 1971

Mike "Shakey" Walton to the Bruins for Rick MacLeish.

Macleish a huge part of the Cup winning teams and decade of dominance was then moved to the Whalers on

July 3, 1981

The were other parts to the deal, but the primary pieces were Rick MacLeish for the Hartford Whalers #1 pick (4th overall). The Flyers used that #1 pick to select Ron Sutter.

Sutter was a key part of the 85 & 87 Cup Finals teams who was dealt to the Blues on

September 22, 1991

The deal was essentially Sutter for Brind'amour (with Murray Baron & Dan Quinn as other spare parts)
Brind'amour was a great Flyer for 8 season until he was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes on

January 23, 2000

Brind'amour brought the Flyers Keith Primeau

Adding up the totals

MacLeish - 741 gp 328 g - 369 a - 697 points + 105 playoff points
Sutter - 555gp 137 g - 222 a - 359 points + 33 playoff points
Brind'amour - 633gp 235 g - 366 a - 601 points + 51 playoff points
Primeau - 312 gp 87 g - 126 a - 213 points + 34 playoff points

Totals - 2241 gp 787 g - 1083 a - 1870 points + 223 playoff points

Other notes
MacLeish scored the Cup winning goal in 1974 and lead the team in playoff scoring both Cup seasons.

Ron Sutter served as captain for 2 seasons.

Keith Primeau has served as captain for 3+ years.

Sutter, Brind'amour and Primeau all played Selke calibre defense

In 1979, the Oilers claimed Reg Thomas in the WHA expansion draft.

That same year, they traded Thomas to the Leafs for a 6th round choice pick.
The Oilers used that pick to select Steve Smith.

In 1991, the Oilers traded Smith to Chicago for a package that included Dave Manson.

In 1994, the Oilers traded Manson to Winnipeg for a package that included Winnipeg's first round pick.

Oilers used that pick to select Jason Bonsignore.

In 1997, Oilers traded Bonsignore in a package to Tampa Bay for players including Roman Hamrlik.

In 2000, Oilers traded Hamrlik for Eric Brewer.

In 2005, Brewer is moved in a package for Chris Pronger.

In 2006, Pronger was traded to Anaheim for a package including Anaheim's first round pick in 2007.
Oilers used that pick to select Jordan Eberle.

In 2017, Oilers traded Eberle to the Islanders for Ryan Strome... who is still on the roster today.

The Maritimes
Calgary Flames

Kent Nilsson (acquired in 1979), who is traded for draft pick that becomes Joe Nieuwendyk (1985), who is traded for Jerome Iginla (1995).

Not the longest, but obviously very important for the Flames.

This gotta be the oldest resurrected thread, no?
Appropriate, isn't it?

Not the longest, but obviously very important for the Flames.
Should include Kenny Agostino, who was aquired for Iginla (along with the slightly shorter-lived Ben Haniowski), and departed as a free agent in 2016.
