As we seen with Vegas picking a trademark is a serious pain in the butt even the lame one are already taken. Now why would you willingly do that when you don't really have to? Branding is costly, re-branding for no reason is wasteful. In most case, I don't think the Whalers are coming back even if a team end up in Hartford. Whaling ain't exactly PC anymore.

Anaheim changed their name. They ceased to be mighty and won a cup.

More recently, the Coyotes changed their name from Phoenix to Arizona.

Nailed it.

Changing the name, or even the city, has happened before.

If we want to be a bit pedantic about it, the Blackhawks changed their name in the '80s. The team name technically was two words, "Black Hawks," for years. But they flip flopped on merch and signage all the time. So they simplified, and made it a consistent one-word across the brand, while also distancing from the Native American name.

As we all know, teams like to make jersey changes and name changes from time to time, but how come no name change? Is the process complicated or is there something else? For example, if a team like Carolina wanted to change their name to 'Thunder', is it not possible? The only time we could see a new name is by a team moving locations or a new team coming in, but not an existing team changing it's name.

Are you thinking somebody needs a name change? If so, who? In a market like Carolina, you change the name and immediately people start thinking the owner is trying to move the team.

I'd take the notion of a name change further. Introduce a short-term, temporary name change.

Have a NHL fan vote to change one team's name. Change the voted team's name for the next season only. Have fan voting similar to the All-Star voting.

For example, Toronto hasn't won anything since '67 and they finished dead last last season. Fan vote Toronto as the Toronto Black Holes...since the most powerful suckage in the universe is a black hole. Or positively...Pittsburgh wins the cup...vote them a name change...something grand, impressive and intimidating to replace the weak penguin moniker.
