I actually like The Athletic. Some of their writers are terrible, others are meh and then they have some really good ones. And they cover most of the sports that interest me and as far as I am concerned they do it for a fair price.

But I do disagree with the votes of several of the 48 writers affiliated with The Athletic that got to vote here, eventhough I would have been fine with any of Leon, MacKinnon or Panarin winning, at least I would not have been too upset if it had not been Leon.

In case anyone's interested this is how the Hart would have turned out if only the guys from The Athletic got to vote.

Thanks for this breakdown. Looks like my eyeball count of the chart earlier was dead on. However on the chart above Drai placed 46 times. The actual number is 45 as two The Athletic scribes left him off their ballots.

Drai is not on the list of either Dom Lywhatsgarble or Rob Rossi

The latter leaves Drai off the list and doubles down with write ins for Josi and Malkin. Malkin only recieved 3 5th place votes (no others) amoung 170ballots. Only Rossi had him instead of Draisaitl on their ballots. I mean its astounding enough that anybody would leave Leon right off the ballot, but to put josi and malkin there is insane outlier voting. Josi was only voted for 4 times out of 170 ballots. The probability, all other things being equal, to have 2 of these represent your top 5 is incredible. A list derived that could only be arrived at through sheer bias, or flat out trolling. Rossi voting amazingly is even worse than Dom's. I didn't think that was possible..

Honestly it's an integrity problem the PWHA doesn't really care to ever even pretend to address. There's guys and options, but there's there's this Sh*t which is absurd garbage.

You have only counted 47 Athletic voters. I counted 48. I don't know if I added one non-Athletic writer by mistake, but below were the ones I used.

28% of votes are from 1 paywall site? Interesting. Probably not a great sign for hockey media in general.

Ironically, Bedoes was born in Alberta and graduated from the U of A. I always thought he was a born and bred Easterner.
Never agree dwith him, but I think he knew it was part of the schtick to make some outrageous noise.

Hopefully my last post about this dom fellow. I looked at his voting for all awards. There were 169 or 170 voters for each award.

Norris
- the only voter to leave John Carlson off his ballot; Carlson finished 2nd
- the only person to vote for Jared Spurgeon (5th place)
- 1 of 8 voters to give Charlie McAvoy a vote (4th place)

Selke
- 1 of 7 to leave Sean Couturier off his ballot; Couturier won
- 1 of 6 to give Nick Foligno a vote (5th place)

Hart
- 1 of 2 to leave Leon Draisaitl off his ballot; Draisaitl won
- 1 of 6 to give Auston Matthews a vote (5th place)

All-Star Team
- 1 of 11 to have Auston Matthews on his Centre ballot (2nd place)**
- 1 of 4 to have Max Pacioretty on his Left Wing ballot (3rd place)
- 1 of 10 to have Mark Stone on his Right Wing ballot (3rd place)
- 1 of 5 voters to have Jared Spurgeon on his Defenseman ballot (5th place)

**His co-worker at The Athletic, Sean McIndoe, was the only person to leave Draisaitl off his ballot entirely.

I...don't think Dom is all wrong on John Carlson. I think that one you can debate.

Couturier though is at least a top 5 Selke guy and there is no argument for Matthews over Drai.

Couturier though is at least a top 5 Selke guy and there is no argument for Matthews over Drai.

I actually tried to read his "explanation" but for several reasons I stopped not even half way through and I only skimmed the rest of it.
Some of that was on me, because he throws out a lot of advanced stats that I am just not familiar with and I have no idea if the actually have any relevance.

But right from the start of his explanation I was put off by him praising himself for being bold to go against the grain and leave these guys (Drai, Couts and Carlson) of his ballot.
That made me already skeptical of any reasoning he would try to provide later on.
I have never taken any writing or journalism classes, but overall (or at least as far as I got in his article) it was not very well written. To be fair it also wasn't terrible (content not withstanding).

Maybe I will give it another shot some time, but all this harping on advanced stats is a real turn off for me. I don't mind them as a throw-in to emphasize a point, but if they account for most of the article it gets tiresome for me.
