Will the Leafs win more than 49 games this season?

Looking at how many teams we swept last year and taking into account our record last year (49 wins), I think a lot of people are expecting us to take another step forward this season, I think its going to be a dog fight to crack 45 wins.

When you look at last years W/L record by team are there any surprises for you?

On the wins side beating Chicago both games, although they had an off year, it still surprises me a bit. Beating Anaheim both times is a surprise for me. The sheer dominance of Les Habitants should bring more joy to me, but TBH they were such a crappy team, poorly coached, low skill, low effort team, the games were not enjoyable to watch, the final scores were great but it was like watching a very good NHL team play vs a really bad AHL team, no entertainment value watching the Habs. Beating Nashville both games is a bit of a surprise.

On the loss side, the 0 wins and 3 losses vs Philly really surprised me

I'm of the belief that we underplayed against certain teams.

Philly? They're an okay team and they play us hard, but I do believe in one of those games we led into the 3rd and sewered, and another they got a late go-ahead goal to take it.

I also remember in one of the Colorado games, as good as Matthews is, MacKinnon made him his bitch.

One of the Vancouver losses Markstrom put up a ten bell performance.

Minny trapped us to death in their victory.

The first jersey loss was a blowout, like 6-3 or something in October and served as a wake-up call.

We were 500 or above against 80% of the league. We're gonna be fine.

Among the 15 other playoff teams they had a winning record against Nashville, Boston, Anaheim and pens Going a combined 9-2-1 against them. Against the other 11 playoff teams 9-15-3 which is not nearly good enough. There is still a lot of work to be done.

Looking at the W/L record, something struck me as unique (or maybe its not), we won points vs every team in the league last year. that cant be all that common, where a team gets a point vs every team?

This is a strange way to choose to frame it that just makes things look worse than they are.

We were 1W & 1L against each of: WPG, VGK, SJS, MIN, LAK

So between NSH, BOS, ANA, PIT, WPG, VGK, SJS, MIN, LAK (which includes a great many of the best teams in the league) we were 14-7-1

We were only bad against like a half dozen teams, one of which wasn't a playoff team (STL)

TBL (1/2/0/1), COL (0/1/0/1), WSH (1/2), PHI (0/2/1), NJD (1/2), STL (0/1/0/1)

Also for good measure. The St. Louis & Colorado ones are 2 games samples where we happened to lose 1 of the 2 in OT. That's a slim margin from being .500, so I'm not sure how meaningful those 2 even are.

Hell, even Tampa. We win that OT game and the season series was 2-2.

Is it though? They only had a winning record against 4 of 15 playoff teams, .500 against 6 and a loosing record against the other 5.

Contrast that 2 Canada's other contender the Jets, they had a winning record against 10 of 15 playoff teams combined 17-3-7, .500 against 3 (3-3-1) and losing records against 2 (2-4-1)

A combined 41 games against playoff teams where they were 22-10-9 which equates to a.646 points percentage compared to leafs against playoff teams of 18-17-4 or .513

Leafs are a great team and will only get better but last year was deceiving in that a lot of points we accumulated against horrid competition in the East - notably win the Atlantic that had (Mtl.Buffalo/Ottawa/florida and det)

and the game we won we shouldnt have, i remember us being soundly outplayed. i believe willy won that for us with like 5 seconds left in OT after a horrendous TO from jersey.

Not sure how common that is either, but I'll take it, as it's certainly helpful. Getting the maximum number of points available against just under 1/3 of the NHL is good too.

The performances (record) against Ottawa and Buffalo is an eye opener - can't go 2W2L against these kind of teams, esp in the same division.

You act like being .500 in 2 games played is such a terrible thing.

Everyone plays against bad competition.
Our year wasn't deceiving. That argument largely falls apart when you realize that outside of Montreal and Detroit we didn't even do amazingly well against that group of 5 teams you mentioned. Yeah, 4-0 against Montreal, 3-1 versus Detroit, but between Ottawa, Buffalo & Florida we were 6-4-2. Conversely in the West, Winnipeg plays Edmonton, Vancouver, and Arizona more than we did, winning all 9 games against them. They also won all their games versus both of Ottawa & Buffalo. Got 3 of 4 points versus Montreal.

As for the rest. Toronto wins a couple OTs here. Winnipeg loses a couple OTs there. Team x makes the playoffs instead of team Y. There's too many things that effect these records. Winnipeg's likely to come out somewhat better in most versions because they simply were a bit better than us in 2017/18, but I really don't think we need to read into them particularly.

I mean, say for instance Philly finished with 96 points instead of 98. Columbus becomes 3rd in division for Metro & Florida makes it as WC2. With Philly out, and Florida in, the Leafs record improves to 20-15-5 and their win% jumps from .513 to .563.

Why not compare to the other contenders:
WPG vs PIT, WSH, VGK, NSH, TBL, BOS, TOR => 8-5-5 = .583
TOR vs PIT, WSH, VGK, NSH, TBL, BOS, WPG => 11-8-1 = .575

Agreed, Ottawa with all the off ice distractions should be a s#it show thsi year, we should sweep them or at least win most of our games vs them, Montreal should be a cake walk too, but I think Buffalo will be MUCH better this year and for what ever reason we tend to have problems with them, I would love to see us spank them but a .500 record vs Buffalo would be considered a good thing in my books.

I know you didn't mention Winnipeg for this year but I gotta think Maurice will "F" it up some how, he has a long record of F-ing good things up.

My prediction is Maurice is fired before Feb.

I think it was like 2s left and Hall visibly gave up on covering him. Andersen was also popping off in that OT. One of the highlights of the season for me!

Nothing really stands out as surprises, we won a lot of games and were a good team, no team in particular had their way with us.

Absolutely love that 4-0-0 18 GF, 5 GA against Montreal though. Pure domination, should be another easy 8 points against them this season again.
