dermott is light years ahead of Nielsen. Unfortunately Nielsen has pretty bad skating and because of that (or on top of that) he is pretty bad defensively in terms of reads.

i think CBJ would be crazy to do that trade, while jenner doesn't score as much he brings so much more to a team is 4 years younger, cheaper and a RFA at the end of his next deal. If JVR isn't scoring he is beyond useless

Isn't Jenner injury riddled? I'm thinking 2 or 3 concussions?

JVR and Bozak aren't going anywhere unless someone overpays. I'm not sure Nylander is going to succeed at center next season so we will need Bozak at 3C in case Nylander falters. JVR still has a great scoring touch and despite his defensive issues is a good complimentary scorer and easily a 2nd line LW. Which won't land us a top pairing defender, even if we add. Players with JVRs numbers will easily cost $2 million more in free agency, and shouldn't be replaced internally either (I consider Kapanen a great asset that should be added to the team, not replacing a top 6 forward). If we suck next year, then we can look at moving JVR at the deadline. Okposo, Lucic, Eriksson and Backes got 6M, even Ladd got 5.5. I would take JVR over any of them, and he comes $2 million cheaper for the time being.

Its no better on paper than this year, but experience and development should help this team take another step forward, especially the defense. We need to remember that outside Hunlak, our oldest defender is Gardiner at 26.

going by watching marlies games and listening to trusted posters here yeah. If he has been working on those things for 2 yrs now that doesn't bode well for us then. I live in Toronto

I believe Walshy lives in Canada. He catches the odd game.
I've seen you say this a few times that people aren't watching the games. Do you?
Nielsen is absolutely working on all those things, but Dermott is better than him right now without a doubt.

He isn't wrong. Dermott has a more well rounded game than Nielsen. I like Nielsen, but he is Franson 2.0 (except LHD). Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Franson was very poorly developed and could have been a better player if he didn't try and hit everything and had a better transition game. Nielsen's speed/transition game would be below average at the NHL level, but thats not to say he doesn't have a whole bunch of potential.
