Had to look that up

An Amateur tryout (ATO) contract exists in the NHL, the AHL and the ECHL. ... In the NHL, an ATO may only be used for one day on an emergency basis, with no pay or compensation for skaters, per Exhibit 17 of the NHL–NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement

Take your heightism elsewhere. #manletnation

Facts are even "heightist":

Average height of an NHLer: 6'1"
Average height of a Canadian male: 5'9"

Number of Leafs 5'10" and under: 3 out of 23
Number of NHL defensemen 5'10" and under: 14 of 218, 6.4% (minimum 25 games)

All that being said, I sincerely hope he turns out great because he's now a Leaf. It appears that Dubas is trying to over-game a system where smaller players and players from obscure NCAA divisions are undervalued.

Also take note that he isn't slightly built by any stretch of the imagination.

I think this is the first time Ive heard "future ELC"

I've read it in a few of the other signings as well. I like that they're distinguishing between the two types of contract signings (the other where the 1st year of ELC is burned at the end of the current season). That used to be confusing.
