Fair point, but when you consider the London Knights have been the OHL's version of the Chicago Blackhawks with 2 OHL titles this decade, there are worse old boys clubs to have...

If you want to be the best you've got to hire people from the best run organizations. The Knights results speaks to the quality of their staff.

The Leafs have been rolling with a bunch of alumni cronies and old timers on the scouting staff for many years with guys like Palmateer, Mike Penny, Tom Watt over the years. Their pro scouting hasn't been savvy and their amateur scouting is mediocre at best.

Why not hire people who are actually successful?

apparently because its in the OHL, we shouldn't be bothering.

Dubas is a stats guy and numbers cruncher.

He knows that the CHL provides over > 50% of the current NHL talent with the OHL providing the most of the 3 junior leagues in Canada.

So hiring Hofford by the Leafs to scout the OHL (his forte) is playing the %'s odds along with Hunter and Dubas background in the OHL focusing on the biggest feeder system of future NHLers.

Don Cherry approves of this message.

PS. You don't need extensive extended large scouting teams scouring US High School players trying to find talent when you have the largest target markets well covered which includes the great work Thommie Bergman has done in Europe.

It's not like the leafs are only going to be drafting from the OHL from now on... These guys will be able to use the leafs vast resources to cover all markets, including the U.S., Russia, ect.

LMAO - he'll probably realize quickly that he needs to take his phone number down from that site! :laugh:

I can already see some HF Board Member after a few too many pops calling him up to discuss the Strome vs. Marner debate! :help:

I was thinking that myself. Wondering if we could get a phone interview with the Leafs board here. :laugh:

How many amateur scouts do we need realistically?

CHL = 3 (one per league)
NCAA = 1
USHL = 1 (these two can support each other)
Sweden = 1
Finland & Czech = 1
Russia = 1

That's a team of 8 guys to do it up right IMO.

Looking at the Leafs management page, right now we have one Sweden/Scandinavia (Bergman), one Russia (Ladygin), one U.S. (Lilley), two OHL (Clark and now Hofford) and one WHL (Malarchuk) scout(s). Plus 3 pro scouts and Morrison.

We probably need another Scandinavian scout, maybe another Russia scout, a Czech/Slovakia/Germany/Swiss/etc. scout or two. That would mean we would have 5 or 6 European Scouts.

Then we need another two U.S. Scouts, two OHL scouts, 2 or 3 WHL scouts and 3 or 4 QMJHL scouts. That would give us 13-15 North American Scouts.

Then three pro scouts. Maybe we need another one. Then we need a director of pro scouting, but that's about it.

21-25 Scouts plus two directors? Is that about right? Lots of reach, etc. We just need to find the right people, and it's going to be the people outside of the OHL that are going to be the hardest to find.

At least player development seems pretty much set up after we find a Director. Staios and Belfry as managers, and Hofford also being there having plenty of experience. We felt good enough to not bring back Bob Carpenter as a consultant for player development. That's a pretty good team.

There needs to be lots of overlap. If you're trying to choose between two or three players, you need scouts who have watched them all and can compare them. Otherwise a GM would never get anything close to a consensus among his scouts.

Do we really only have 1 scout each for US, Russia, Scandavania? Wow, you'd think we'd have at least 2 for each.

Nobody does one per league. Right now we have like 6, and we don't have anyone for most of Europe or for the QMJHL. I would say three per NA league (and 4 for OHL) and maybe 6 Europe scouts is about right. That's about how many we had before.

Well we have 0 for QMJHL and 1 for WHL right now. We only have 5 (now 6) Amateur scouts. Before Hofford, we only had one OHL scout, and even he was only here since December. We don't really need any right now... All of the scouting is now done. We will start hiring some more before next season. Hofford was just the start. By next season, we should have at least 5 European scouts and at least 2 or 3 scouts per region in North America.

Very good hiring of Hofford. I thought I posted a bit about him a few weeks ago on another thread but I can't find it.

Lindsay has been a coach & a scout at the CHL level for a number of years, most know that. In the minor levels of hockey he is extremely well known. He has run tournaments & spring tournament teams for almost 20 years. He probably knows more about Stamkos' age group & younger than most people in Ontario & maybe in Canada. The last minor team he coached was the Don Mill's Flyers which had David Levin on it, who was the number 1 pick for the last OHL priority draft. Hofford also ran the Hill Academy's Hockey program.

As an amateur scout he is way ahead of the game with respect to most prospects & future prospects.

my question is did we have 1 for each region before...because if that's the case, no wonder we suck at drafting so much. But I guess those are what's left over from the scouting firing binge the organization went through..

This guy was a coach until 2006-07 and has been with OHL for over 10 years, this guy is experienced, even though he has been in scouting for # of years but coaching is passion

The team is going to benefit from his vast experience in both coaching and scouting with OHL
