would have preferred Veleno or swing for the fences with Wilde in a position of need. Let's hope that Sandin is an under the radar player with a much larger ceiling than originally thought like Dermott has turned out to be

Would have loved to have picked Veleno or Bode Wilde here.. we already have liljegren, why do we need the left handed version too

Stop looking at positional needs... good lord people take a step back and breath.

He's a very smart defenseman and plays a really good 2-way game. There's nothing to hate about this prospect just because you think the Leafs needed a Center or RHD.

Chris Johnston says that Rasmus Sandin signed a deal with Rogle BK of the SHL for next season.

Not even close.

Very close. Saw both in person, multiple times.. many of their strengths are the same. Both lacking physicality to win board battles. Good hockey minds. Good skaters, not great. Both with perceived decent, but not spectacular upside.

Percy was a high IQ guy who played solid positional defense. Good, but not great skater, kept the play in front of him.

Hugely similar.

Percy was nowhere near this dominant offensively. It's not even close to being similar.

And Percy did OK before he got into concussion problems.

Dermott is very similar to Sandin as well, but even Dermott wasn't as good offensively.

But what if they have too many good players in the same position? Isn't that illegal?

I feel almost the exact same about this pick as I did with the Dermott selection in 2015. Not an overly flashy player, or one who excites you on draft day, but oozes smarts and maturity in their games. Arguably the best defensive game for a D man in the OHL.

The fact that he went almost PPG as a rookie defensemen in the OHL without top PP time is very appealing and suggests that he will explode next season when his role expands. His ability to add strength and speed moving forward will determine if he becomes an impact NHLer.
