LD Oscar Klefbom (2011, 19th overall, Edmonton)

I just wonder if someone here have a few info on him? I think he had 6 assists (if my notes are alright) on the Ivan Hlinka tournament, which would make him the tournament leader for this category. I know he took advantage of the non-eligibility of Larsson to be the quarterback of the Swedish Power Play, but he still the passing leader of the tournament!

I'm just curious to know if he's as good as his stats shown. And if it possible, a comparison with a NHL (it can be a farmer NHL player too).

Haven't seen him play live, so I won't venture a guess on a comparison to a player. I'll say that I really like Central Scouting's Players To Watch for 2011 list when it comes to Swedish players, and they list Klefbom as a B player (while having six players in Sweden as A players). By their definitions, those rankings mean the following:

A Rating -- A 'must see' player who is predicted to be a potential First or Second Round Draft selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft
B Rating -- A player to note if you are in the area, a potential selection in the Third to Fifth Round Draft Selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft

So I think ISS has him ranked a bit too high based on what he's accomplished so far, and the reason for their ranking is his great showing in the Ivan Hlinka tournament.

Oscar seems like a solid player though, and he seems to be doing alright playing against men in Division 1 (i.e. Tier III) with Skåre BK.

Thank you for the infos! I'm not a big fan of the Central Scouting, but it's more for their QMJHL rankings, so I'll believe you for the Swedish rankings.

Btw, is that me or this draft will be one of the best in the history for the Sweden? It makes a while I haven't seen that much good prospects from there!

One of the better but it will not top the 2009 draft. Probable outcome,
4-5 Swedes gets taken in the first round, 2-3 gets taken in the second round.

Based on what I saw at Hlinka Cup, I think Brodin and Bengtsson are better prospects than Klefbom.

I forsee Klefbom rising dramatically on draft day, right up into the top 15.

5. Klefbom - 6'4" 200 lbs; PPG blueliner in U18 games, captain of the SWE WJC U18 team; chosen best player on the team by his coach after that tourny.

I hope the Avs have a shot at Siemens at 11, but if he's gone, I wouldn't be shocked if they take Klefbom there. Seems like one of those guys that is MUCH higher on some teams lists than others. The Avs could do that, especially if they have a FW picked at #2.

Klefbom is a very smart and for his size very smooth defenseman both in terms of skating and puck handling. Not as much so as his teammate Jonas Brodin, obviously, but he's got the bigger body to make up for it, perhaps making his potential even higher. He's not as safe a pick as Brodin is, and will most likely be picked after Brodin is gone. Mid-first for Brodin and late first for Klefbom is my guess.

Have we said this about a Swede in a while? Anyhow, doesn't take full advantage of his size, and probably won't give you anything really significant in terms of power play value for an NHL club.

I really liked him at the U-18, very good physical tools and as pointed out, he skates well and has the hockey IQ.

But the two are different styles, so if teams are in need or looking more at big, physical defenders, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see them snag Klefbom over Brodin.

The only reason why Brodin is farther along then Klefbom is because Klefbom as been use less. He's one of the best team in sweeden. Also you are correct that Klfbom is more of a DD compare to Brodin wich he's a Two way Defencement. But I see more of a upside from Klefbom. I would say that Brodin will be a late 1st and Klefbom will be a mid 2nd. Hopefully Detroit could pull a trick out of there bag and draft them in the 2nd round.
