Top 4 potential, probably can see spot duty on the top pair, but doubt he will pan out as one. Will be a PP qaurterback on the power play however, his shot is stupid accurate. Very poise with the puck, really settled down this year, and can move the puck up the ice like the best of him. Probably will top out as a 40 point scorer, and a PP specialist on it. Still needs to improve defensively, but has made huge strides in that department this season, resulting in more ice time in key moments. A real Gem for a 6th rounder. One of the very few bright spots on Defense for the Bolts.

He has 39 PIMS. He's a +28.

Like Bolt said Barbario is going to be an offensive quarter back and always makes that first pass out of the zone look easy. He's pretty much a prototypical offensive D-man. Good shot, good passing, plays a risky game but he's learning how to pick his spots pretty quickly, not overly physical but isn't expected to be considering his role.

I remember when he was drafted into the Q, I was expecting him to be a big hitting D-man simply because his last name is close to Barbarian

I feel his defensive play is underrated though. He is developing that aspect of his game Norfolk, and I feel in several years he COULD become a top pairing dman for the bolts.

Watched him play 3 years here in Moncton, and the only Dman ive ever seen better come through here was Yandle(Savard a close 3rd). I said it on draft day that Tampa got an absolute steal in the 6th round, and I still havent figured out how he managed to go unnoticed by so many teams.

He's one of those players who was just able to slow down the play and calm down his team with ease. Yes he often played a risky game, but he has an incredible ability to get to stop speed so fast that he was often able to get back into the play if he was caught playing too much offence.

His defensive play is also very underrated, especially in important games. In the memorial cup run his play was just 100x better than it was during the regular season, and thats saying a lot considering how well he played during the season. He was ahead of both Gormley and Savard during the playoffs, serving as our number one D, and was always ahead of Gormley all season.

Tampa has got one hell of a player coming to play for them soon.

Mark Barberio Potential?

What are everyone's thoughts on Mark Barberio? Personally, he was one of the toughest defenseman I have ever played against. He was absolutely fantastic at moving the puck, and had that ability to slow plays down whenever he wanted to.

He was also great defensively, especially using his speed to get back into the play if he was ever caught out of position.

He is still young (just turned 23) and he won AHL Denfenseman of the year last season if I am mistaken. He also has 40 points on just 68 games this year.

So why hasnt Tampa called him up yet, considering their D is less than stellar..?

I don't have an answer for you but I am also curious about everything you asked.

We think he will be a servicable 2nd pairing defender for us in the future. He is NHL ready for sure, but we have/had 2 NHL ready defenderswith him and Gudas and Gudas was the better fit to play in Tampa as he brought in much needed physicality, and is the better defensice guy of those two. Expect Barberio to get a spot out of camp this summer and maybe SY will even test him this year for 3 or 4 games.
And Yzerman is known to let players develop longer in the minors (like the Red Wings), so he prefers to let the guys with the most upside stay down as long as he thinks they can improve on the AHL level. He just doesn't want to rush the guys and this has worekout out quit well for us so far.

Tampa has called up since the lockout ended Conacher, Killorn, Palat, Johnson, Panik, Gudas and Desjardins.

5 of Syracuse's top 6, their starting goalie and top pairing dman.

Thats the simple reason why Barberio hasn't seen time, on top of that they couldn't justify bringing up Barberio for a look, when they had already had to raid Syracuse due to injuries.

Gudas offers something missing on the Tampa blueline, grit, which is why he was called up over Barberio.

In the future bolts fans as said hope that he becomes a middle pairing dman who can run a PP. He may get a couple of games this season, i'm not sure.

We also have an abundance of LHD so he wasn't needed as much as Gudas RH. He needs to continue to improve his own zone play.

He needs to use his body more and improve his footspeed..

I dont know about foot speed. When I played against him, that was one thing we all noticed. If you managed to get by him, you had better keep moving as he was going to catch most players, his skating seemed fine with me. Perhaps he hasnt improved on that since his Q days.

Barberio is a good prospect and will probably be a good NHLer. Tampa signing Matt Carle kind of blocked Barberio's path since they are similar players. LHD, puck mover, finesse style, average size. Barberio has the better shot, and I think he will be the better player eventually, time will tell.

I know foot speed was an issue when he was in Moncton. He has improved since than but it's still a weakness. I think he has top-4 upside.

Barberio

Is this guy going to get a chance to play? Or will he be sitting in the tampa press box for the foreseeable future? does he have to clear waivers to be sent down?

He has to clear waivers, so it's unlikely he'll be sent down. He's just waiting for his turn. He'll get in again, but for the time being it's hard to say he deserves in over the other 6 dmen and the bolts are playing pretty well too. Sustr kind of won that last spot over Barberio and so far he's been good so I wouldn't change anything either right now.
