Value of: Laurent Brossoit’s negotiation rights

Brossoit has had himself a really strong season and will be deserving of an opportunity to be some team’s starter or 1A/1B option between the pipes.

Assuming New Jersey gets Markstrom, teams like Buffalo, Detroit, Los Angeles,
and Philadelphia would be wise to look into signing him.

What is the standard rate for negotiation rights? 3rd round pick? Would any of these teams be interested in acquiring first right to negotiate a deal prior to hitting UFA?

Selfishly I wish the Jets could keep him as he and Helle compliment each other very well, but he does deserve more of an opportunity to play elsewhere.

Off the top of my head:

April 2017: Chicago traded Scott Darling to Carolina for a 3rd round pick; Darling extended with Carolina a week after

May 2017: Los Angeles traded Ben Bishop to Dallas for a 4th round pick; Bishop extended with Dallas a couple days later

Not sure if there's a more recent example.

The guy is a long established backup goalie, he is what he is, he plays 20 games a year.
Nobody views him as a starter except the OP.
The only time I have seen him have to carry a team with a starter workload was a short period with Vegas a few years back and he cratered.

Useless history lesson: In the offseason of 2019, Ryan Hartman was a RFA with Philly and traded to the Stars for Tyler Pitlick. A day later, he wasn’t offered a QO by the Stars and later signed with Minnesota on day one of free agency. While he wasn’t technically a free agent when traded by Philly, for all intents and purposes he was set to become one as they had no intention of offering him a QO, and Dallas basically traded the equivalent of a late pick, presumably to “negotiate”, before then also electing to release him to free agency.

Not sure he's viewed as even a true 1B, or at least not consistent enough to merit paying him like one.

Still super glad he's carved a heck of a career for himself considering his draft position and surviving being a Flames goalie prospect XD

Hopefully he loves it in Winnipeg, doesn't mind getting paid a full season's salary for playing 25 games and is willing to stick around and extend for 3 years lol

Forgot he was with Philly and also can't believe he didn't remain there, he is built for that team

To OP's question - maybe a 6th or 7th round pick if you're lucky? He's a good backup but he's 31, not like you're banking on upside

There's too many goalies who will be available this summer for him to be a valuable commodity.

Samsonov, Brossoit, Fleury, Driedger, Kahkonen, Francouz, Lankinen, DeSmith, Nedeljkovic, Copley, Stolarz, Wedgewood, Talbot, Reimer, Rittich, Jones....

We don’t have a minor league backup that will be ready anytime soon, so I’d rather sign him for another 2 years at the same $1.75M. Brossoit likes to work with Hellebuyck and it’s a good fit, hopefully he feels the same.

Every Jets fan would but that’s not something he’ll be interested in. Why sign at what would be his absolute basement? He’ll test UFA and someone will definitely pay more.

He helped walked Vegas to a cup last year and had lots of potential takers in the summer, what makes you think he’ll have better offers when he’s officially back in backup status?

With how Fitzgerald traded, why would NJ not covet yet another #2 goalie?

Is there a bridge to this chorus?

Nedelkjovic from Carolina to Detroit for a 3rd

Husso from St. Louis to Detroit for a 3rd

That seems to be the rate for most goalies now.

Oh no, Tom Fitzgerald got out of Vitek's contract, got 2 goalies who have played significantly better since the deadline than the alleged top guy, and didn't go all in with his best player and best dman injured. Fireable offense.

Clearly this was the window, there will be no better chance to win than with 2 rookie dmen, your best player at 50%, and dougie hamilton out for the year.

Probably nothing. He's a 31 year old backup whose career high in games played is 24. Way too much quality goaltending potentially available this summer for anyone to feel the need to trade for his rights.
