The Avs announces talking about "staying with the playoff pack" while we're 11 points down from the wild card spot. Not happening but got me wondering about how far out of the playoffs has a team been that came back to make it?

Depends of when you talk about? Current format or top 8 format?

2009 Blues? They were 14-21-3 and last in the west at one point, finished on a 27-10-7 tear and made the playoffs.

Sens at 14 with the Hamburglar run is the record I think.

Playoffs format/#teams has changed so it is hard to compare across decades but sens are a good benchmark. 93-94 Isls overcame a 12 pts deficit.

found washington was also at 14 in 2007

The thing is i seem to remember the NHL coming out and saying the Senators is the first team in modern history to overcome a 14 point deficit to make the playoffs. It is also on their wiki page

Figured the sharks would be a good guess the year the trade happened (thornton). But november 29th a few days before the trade they were only 9 points back of the playoffs.

Cool, easy answer. Secondary question then, what happened with those teams that let them turn it around so well?

For the Sens it was:

1. Hot goaltending. Hot team in general imo.
2. Teams in front of the Sens were sucking.
