The fact the he generated 2 goals and showed a lot of confidence in his skill and skating is a lot more telling of whats to come.

After 5 minutes of research, as far as I can tell, Lane will become the first defenseman to finish his rookie season at a point per game or above since Ryan Poehling.

He has already been on the ice for 4 goals against. That has to be a bit concerning since that was his weakness as a prospect.

As for this, the only one you can really put on him is the 1st where he was playing too high in the zone. After that there was the OT winner where Anderson failed to cover for him, then Seider's goal yesterday which wasn't on him, and then Sprong's where he failed to clear the zone but then kept Sprong to a shot from below the goal line which should never go in if Primeau is positioned properly.

Starting this thread early in honor of @LeProspector and his early thread calls.

Lane scored one billion points in junior and the NCAA. Two points in his first two NHL games and played over 20 minutes in both.

Some doubted if he had the size, skating, and defense for the NHL. None of that will matter because he will continue putting up points and will become one of the best offensive defenseman in the league.

If you are still doubting that after these first two games, you are fighting a losing battle.

Another failed forward playing as a defenceman because it's easier to stand out.

Nice puck skills and elusiveness, average top 6 forward level. But this guy will always be a net negative playing his position. What he should be is a 70-80 point winger.

Barrie is literally the second highest scoring defender in his draft class ahead of the likes of Dmitry Orlov, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Matthias Ekholm and Nick Leddy.

I'm just calling it as I see it. Stylistically they are very similar. And you should be excited to get someone of that level in the second round.

I dunno. His strengths have been amplified even more while his weaknesses remain present. So obviously higher but I don’t know. It’s that weird stage in prospect development where everyone is scattered all over doing their various things so it’s tough to say one legitimate true “re-draft” order.

I understand that, although, I guarantee Hutson goes top 15 in a re-draft had GM's known he would be 5'10 today (was 5'8), let alone be a Hobey Baker finalist two straight years.

Im not saying Hutson will be Quinn Hughes.... it was just to say that its normal to have defensive awareness issues in your first few seasons (let alone your first 2 games!), as an undersized highly skilled Dman. Thats something you learn with experience. Even in NCAA he held his own in the corners against men using. Of course, the NHL is a different animal.

Heres to hoping he can add some pounds and adapt in years down the road.

I think fans get way too hyped for college players when they make the jump to the NHL. Seen it time and time again where they look great and get hyped when they debut near the end of the NHL season only to fizzle out in the long run.

Hab fans are very loud and very passionate, so they have a tendency for moving the overton window of discussion related to their players. I see people bring up Tyson Barrie as a potential comparison, and some take that to be insulting/demeaning/condescending when it shouldn't be as Barrie has had a productive career. But the discussion gets hyper-sensationalized and thus the only valid comparison, without being mean, a hater or hurting someone's feelings, becomes someone like Quinn Hughes, who is about to win the Norris Trophy.

If you think Quinn Hughes and Lane Hutson are the same player, you obviously don’t know much. They have a lot of differences. I also never said Hughes wouldn’t end up a big scorer. Good for him at age 25 he’s learned to play better defense.

You have numerous posts saying he would only be PP specialist, weak defensively, unable to play first-pairing minutes, soft, rover, can't handle defensive responsibilities, be a number one defenseman, etc. You said Brannstrom was a better prospect, and that Dahlin was better player now and will be for the future back in 2020 (and that it wasn't even close). He's been doing it for a while and is about to win a Norris. Put your ego away.

Not sure if you are new to Pavel, he is a good poster that watches a lot of prospects but he is VERY stubborn and does not have come off his initial beliefs, and will only when he absolutely has to in the face of overwhelming in your face NHL results and then usually make excuses in whichever direction whether it's blaming coaching if a guy he likes busts or insinuating that it came randomly, out of nowhere when a guy he doesn't like does well.
