What happens to Laich now? He cleared waivers but wasn't set down. He is in some sort of purgatory now or what is going on?

Laich is on the team right now.

That being said, for the next 29 days (30 less 1 elapsed day) he cant be sent down at any point, much like a player who isnt waiver eligible.

Prust isnt getting a contract so that means 1 more cut to come - likely either Corrado, Brown, Leivo or Laich.

They cannot cut Corrado or Leivo before the deadline today. They would have to clear waivers and they can't do that before the deadline as they would only clear by tomorrow at noon.

The only players right now that can be demoted before the deadline today are Marner, Nylander, Matthews, Hyman, Zaitsev, Brown and Laich (cleared waivers). Obviously, it's between Brown and Laich. Brown was part of the 4 lines yesterday, so unless they change the lines today --- Laich appears to be the odd man out.

There are 2 other ways for the Leafs to not have to demote Laich or Brown; trade someone from the roster or have someone go on the IR.

You could do a paper move and move Brown down tonight though.

I get what you mean, but paper moves have been done to buy time to waive guys

Why wouldn't they have done that yesterday though? Seems like it would be pretty unnecessary to do it that way. It's not even about protecting a player from being claimed, you're exposing a player very likely alone on the waiver wire instead of with a lot of other players like Griffith, Pulkkinen, etc.

But yes, that would be technically possible.

sorry for asking, perhaps this was already discussed, but...

When do the leafs have to make their decision (since they have first dips)?... I don't think they can wait till 5pm EST, as there are 29 teams behind them.

Thanks.

You have until noon to put in a claim on a player. At noon, the team with the highest priority will get the player they put in a claim for.

The deadline for every team to be down to 23 players and cap complaint is today at 5pm EST. So if they claim a player, they will have 5 hours to get their team down to 23 players.

I believe Lupul will be placed on LTIR officially once the season starts and his $5.25 mil cap can then be used for a replacement player and Laich $4.5 mil cap will overlap him and replace him.
