Well straight value i dont think its that far off.

Kuznetsov vs Monahan points last 5 years
16-17; 59-58
17-18; 83-64
18-19; 72-82
19-20; 52-48
20-21; 13-20

Last five years totals;
Kuznetsov 89+190=279 in 321 gp = 0,87 ppg
Monahan 121+151=272 in 334 gp = 0,81 ppg

Mohanan is 2 years older. Has almost 1,5m less of cap hit.
Monahan has this + 2 years on term, Kuzy has this + 4 years.

Actual money owed for Monahan the next 2+this years about 13,375 millions.
Actual money owed for Kuzy the next 2+this years about 14,5 millions + 16 millions for the next 2 years.

So while Kuzy is little more effective in total points, Monahan scores more goals. While Kuzy is 2 years younger, Monahan has less cap and money owed.

I think its fair deal on value point, but Kuzys higher ceiling makes it a no go for Caps at the end. If he goes on the cup-run-mode he had 2018 he can be the difference maker in first round exit vs winning a cup.

I fail to see why Calgary does this. I don’t see Kuznetsov being a player that will thrive under Sutter.

Monahan's awesome, IMO pretty underrated too, I don't think he has the absolute game-breaking ability Kuzy has though so I can't see the Caps being too interested if they want to win another cup.

Monahan gets under rated on these boards and all his production is attributed to Johnny. The fact is he is consistent and he knows how to put the puck in the net.

Id say Kuznetsov is definitely the higher skill player but that doesn't ways translate to more value or more production. Calgary should keep Monahan in this scenario.

neither team should bother, these guys productive and part of each team's identities

Monahan has been regressing badly over the past 2 seasons but I don't see how a skilled Russian turning 29 in a month playing under Sutter is the fix. Just not a good trade for either team.

Alright, you’ve forced my hand.

In all seriousness, the deal should NOT be done for chemistry’s sake. Washington shouldn’t be making any deals, unless they’re bolstering the roster and not just a lateral move like this one.
