Officially, no. Kovalchuk cannot be traded until July 1st when he can sign a contract.

The Devils also can't send Kovalchuk to Vegas for whoever they selected from NJ as Vegas can't trade back players to their team within a year.

What they might be able to do, if they want, is agree with the Devils on a handshake deal that they would take player X that the Devils are okay with and the Devils will send them Kovalchuk on July 1st. Normally such deals aren't allowed because you can't have deals with the intent of future deals but who knows with the expansion draft complicating things.

Regardless, though, the Devils wouldn't do that. They have no-one they are going to lose that is worth the ~2nd round pick Kovalchuk should return. Heck, we would protect him if we needed to.. we have open slots.

Cool as it would be to see Kovy with Shipachyov (Sp?) to start the season, I just don't see it happening.

can't see Vegas giving up futures for Kovy. He's more likely to go to a team trying to win now.

Yup. Every indication has been that he wants to play for a contender. Casual fans figure Kovy just wants money, glamour and a high-roller lifestyle and they think Vegas, but I haven't seen anything to tell me that's true.
