PANARIN OUTLAST DRURY AS GM & PRES OUSTED FROM RANGERS ORGANIZATION
2024 Offseason News
The rift between Drury and Panarin has been evident since the team was knocked off by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 4 straight losses following a 2-0 series lead in the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals.
Drury was reportedly, and rightfully so, frustrated with Panarin's performance; a feeling that was only augmented by the star forwards lackluster performance in the following 2023 Playoffs, 0 goals and 2 assists in a 7-game 1st Round loss to the New Jersey Devils.
Panarins NMC caused Gerard Gallant to fall victim to the loss, the fall guy for a combined 2 goals from Zibanejad (1), Trocheck (1), and Panarin (0).
Drury elected to hire Peter Laviolette, and following another 1st round loss, in which Panarin once again underperformed, both Laviolette and Drury were alleviated from their duties.
Shadowman and former GM & President Glen Sather presided over operations while the team looked for a replacement. In the end, they elected on GM & President Brant King, who promoted Kris Knoblaunch from AHL Hartford to be the new HC.
In the introductory Press Conference for both the new GM and Coach, critics were pointed to Glen Sather remaining as an advisor to rookie GM Brant King. Many fans and beat reporters were worried about King's lack of experience, but he is heralded as an up and coming mind in the hockey world.
He will be tasked with making decisions on some very important parts of the current core. Both Chris Kreider's and Jacob Trouba's NMC's expire, changing to modified NTC's. Could the new GM shake things up by trading the teams longest tenured player or their current captain?
How will King deal with Panarin? Can Knoblaunch get the most out of him? Panarin now, deservedly so, has a reputation as a coach killer, as he is now on his 4th head coach in just 5 years with the organization. Perhaps if a different domino falls first and he no longer sees NY as a contending team at this point in his career, he could have a willingness to waive his NMC for the right destination?
Alexis Lafreniere and K'Andre Miller entire the final year of their 2-year bridge deals signed last offseason. Kaapo Kakko is an RFA. Barclay Goodrow is an expensive 4th liner who survived last offseason, but seems destined for a new team this one. Ryan Lindgren needs a new contract, or needs to be replaced.
The team will need to compete, or show signs of being able to compete again as soon as next season, if GMBK hopes to re-sign pending UFA goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who is frustrated following 2 straight 1st round exits. He does not seem willing to give NYR the same leeway of putting the weight on his shoulders each season with no roster help his entire career that Henrik Lundqvist did.
