For all the flak Gardiner gets, he produces good results. Over the past 3 years while he's been on the ice, the team has seen 212 goals for and 153 goals against. In fact, of all players who have played 3000+ minutes over those 3 years, Gardiner is #4 overall in GF%. He's 3rd in on-ice goals for over that timeframe. Granted those 153 goals against usually come at the worst time possible.

Never been a fan of either but Gardiner is the better player.

Gardiner.

He’s actually not a bad defender, he’s just far too mistake prone. He’s such a unique skater, so nonchalant in using his edges to escape danger that when it goes wrong, it looks really bad.

He’s good for a few chances at each end almost every game and when he’s playing well, the ratio is favourable. If you have a good goalie and insulate him well he’s definitely a useful useful player.

He’s received a lot of criticism lately becaue he continues to make his mistakes at the most inopportune times. He doesn’t know when to make the safe play.

Gardiner for me due to showing that he can play in more difficult 5v5 usage. They're both high event but it seems like only the negative side of that gets focused on by most people

Shatty was heavily sheltered and allowed to play to his strengths in STL.

His play in his own end was hidden by good defensive forwards and RHD like Petro/Parayko along with a Ken Hitchcock system.

Injuries haven’t helped his case.

Love Shatty but Gardiner is the right answer.

They're both great #3's but are technically the second most offensive D-man on your team ideally. Only Rielly on the Leafs generates more offense than Gardiner, only issue is you need a guy like Larsson or Manson for Gardiner or else bad things happen quick.

Gardiner has a bad defensive reputation but grades as a positive defender... unlike Shatts.

Offensively Gards is better 5v5, but Shatts on the PP.
