Could we get Erik Karlsson for a less than premium price if we also offered to take on Bobby Ryan's contract?

I understand there are major issues:

1) Same division
2) Provincial rival
3) Cap
4) Being able to resign EK
5) Cap
5) Ryan's contract is 4 years.
6) CAP!

But is Melnyk in desperate enough financial shape that he would instruct his management team to accept a less than optimum deal on EK just to get rid of the Ryan?

How badly would it hamstring our cap if we had to pay both for the next 2 to 4 years?

Why not just wait a year and try to sign him as a UFA without taking on a horrible huge contract that would make keeping Nylander, Matthews, Marner and Karlsson impossible.

My thinking is that if Melnyk is really hurting for cash, he may want to get rid of him now rather than later. If that's the case, EK may not even make it to UFA. The team he gets traded to (which may not necessarily be us) will undoubtedly try to re-up him ASAP.

It's definitely a lot of cap for any one team to take on. Would have to involve Ottawa's willingness to retain or accept cap back, or a third team to trade Ryan to. Trade protection to consider as well with both players. Not sure ultimately how serious Ottawa is about trading Karlsson and/or involving Ryan's contract in that if so. The answers to those questions will determine how serious a bidder we could be. Seems like a longshot, but I'd expect due diligence to be done if there's any chance or interest.

There's a big difference between "needing money" and not wanting to piss away cash for an unappreciative fanbase .They act like he wants to ice a shyte team and crap on him when he goes out and buys the big ticket players his management team say will turn things around .I still believe the Sens are on their way somewhere else and looking for a clean slate cap wise .

Who...Karlsson...or Meynyk? Maybe both? Would they be construed as tampering...or cap circumvention?
Thank You! Goodnight!:towel:

I'm sure they'd handle it under the table - since it's a delicate situation.

But if we got caught it'd be tough to swallow & it'd leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Regardless - it's a sloppy negotiation tactic - even if they pulled it off....

Good luck.....

Vegas is showing us that we really don't need a Karlsson.

Or a Crosby

Or Ovechkin

Or any f***ing superstar.

We need a team with no ego ready to buy in to the coaches system and do everything night in night out that it takes to win hockey games.

That's what we need.

I think its basically been confirmed that they will undersell EK to also sell Ryan.

I also think that it would be a mistake for us to make the move. Obviously, I have faith in the Leafs management team to know how to allocate cap space (I believe we have the best office in the league for this) so if they think it can be done then I will believe them.

I imagine there's 29 GM's watching Vegas thinking exactly the same thing.

We need a couple good strong defensive dmen. E Karlsson is about the last thing this team needs. He is defensively inept and scoring is not our problem.

How can ya not have ego when you make 10* more than the coach does usually? And know damn well that the coach goes before you go.

And for at least this year and this moment, ya have an entire team with no ego on the same level and likely no "clicks" in the dressing room.

Leafs can't afford having Ryan's cap, never mind having having any chance of signing Karlsson. It's grade 1 math, you don't need a cap specialist to compute the futility of a the trade.

Ottawa fans are going to very disappointed that Ryan is going to remain a 7.25m Sen, and that the return to for EK is going to be lot less than 95% of the posts seen on this site.

You could make a deal to have a cap floor team take Ryan. I don't think it would be that difficult. Ryan isn't a bad player. If a team could afford the cap hit, adding an incentive may be enough.

I disagree that Ottawa won't trade him here. There's not too many options, especially if Karlsson puts Vegas on his no-trade list. Almost all of the teams that will be suitors will be in the East (Toronto, Buffalo, Boston, Philadelphia, Rangers, etc.), and most of them are in Ottawa's division. You'll never be able to get a defenseman of this calibre for less. I want Dubas all-in on this.

No such thing in TO. The most humble player in the league would likely develop and inflated view of himself given the hype and attention that exists.

Let's see if Vegas can pull a Vegas next year first. I can't imagine the guys on that team are going to keep having no egos after a cup finals with new contracts needed to be signed.
