Not 100% sure but I believe Escrows are also applied to signing bonus money. If not, you would hear more about this being a problem within the NHLPA and a guy like Svechnikov would be asking for way more than $4M in year one and nothing in year two.

That’s correct, benefits of signing bonuses are that you get your money up front at the start of the season, given to a competent financial investor that can make an extra million or so over the course of a year. Also those contracts are basically buy out and lockout proof.
