At the tail end of the first round of the 2018 draft, the Ottawa Senators dealt the 22nd overall to the New York Rangers for the 26th + 48th overall selections.
The Rangers drafted K'Andre Miller (LD), a big, strong DMan from the USNDP who was set to join U of Wisconsin for the 2018-2019 season, at 22nd overall. So far, Miller has thrived in UoW, posting 7 points in his first 6 games. This is good for 2nd amongst DMen and 6th overall on his team. He is also a team-leading +9.
The Senators drafted Jacob Bernard-Docker (RD), from the AJHL, 22nd overall, and Johnny Tychonick (LD), from the BCHL, 48th overall. Both are approximately 6'0 and 180 lb. Both players headed to U. of North Dakota for the 2018-2019 seasons - Bernard-Docker has dressed every game, playing on the first and second pairings. He has posted 2 points in 5 games - tied for 6th on the team. Tychonick was a healthy scratch in U of ND's first game, but has played on the 2nd and 3rd pairings since, dressing for 4 games.
As a Sens fan, I really liked the move at the time and still do, but Miller has been incredible to start his college career and he seems to have a level of upside that the other two guys don't quite possess (which is no knock against either guy - Miller is a pure athlete).
So, if you had the choice between K'Andre Miller (22nd ov 2018) or Jacob Bernard-Docker (22nd ov 2018) and Johnny Tychonick (48th ov 2018) today, who would you choose?
