Proposal: Justin Faulk and Derek Ryan for RNH and Matt Benning

Faulk is in a slump but the rest of his career suggests that's all it is and that the goals will start to come again. RNH is off to a nice start, but the rest of his career suggests that he probably hasn't suddenly turned into Crosby or Toews.

Canes are shallow on the defensive right side, but Benning can hold down one of those spots. Ryan is a serviceable bottom center, on pace for 18 goals and 41 points this season (on an offensively challenged Canes team).

Salary is close.

This doesn't meet either team's ideal needs, but if it's something that could actually be done, do you consider it, knowing that your ideal trade probably isn't going to happen? Suggested tweaks that might make the trade worthwhile?

Tough to deal Nuge when he's looked so good this year, but having Faulk on the back end would give the Oilers the PP specialist that they desperately need. I would put some serious thought into this one.

I personally think it is pretty fair, but I am higher on RNH than most. With that being said, it would be tough for the Oil to loose even more offensive depth, especially at C. Carolina doesn't seem to have great depth at RD either.

Two months ago this trade proposal would have had Carolina fans arming themselves for WW3. Funny.

I am not a fan of Faulk's game so I would say no but I'm betting a lot of Edmonton fans would take this and run.

Considering RNH is on a 32 goal/61 point pace while playing on the second line/2nd PP unit is actually pretty good. He's a 50+ point center, last season was an anomoly.

Canes are interested in RNH but not at the cost of Faulk. The Canes don't have the RHD depth to lose Faulk.

Victor Rask + 2018 1st. About as high as I'd go.

This was kind of off the top of my head, as much question as proposal, but here's some additional thought behind it.

Canes really need another good center.
I'm projecting RNH at 55-60 points/season going forward (how realistic is that, Oil fans?).
RNH is young and I see him as being potentially available now. What other good young centers would realistically be available?
Seems like Benning has a little potential upside as a young, right side, depth d-man. My understanding is that he's a decent puck mover and defensively responsible? (again, how close is that, Oil fans?)
We're going to have to shed at least 1 good d-man soon, and Fleury is looking very good so far (although he's a lefty)

Having said all that, on reflection I wouldn't want to pay RNH $6m per for the next 4 years and would ask for some salary retention.

Note: Ron Francis has said he won't trade any of his top 4 d-men this year, so unless we completely spit the bit, I don't see Faulk being moved. Just something to talk about.

RNH is on pace for 60 points or so. I'm trying to decide if he's looked exceptionally good or the rest of the team looks exceptionally bad.

Benning looked much better last year, but he's smoothing his game out after coming back from a concussion. His absolute max upside is probably a Jeff Petry type - good at everything but not excelling anywhere.

I don't think retention is in the cards - at least not without sweetening the deal. Nuge is playing very well and 6 million isn't really that much in the grand scheme of things in today's NHL.

I saw a proposal mentioned, rnh + puljujarvi for faulk + rask, but I don't know if oilers fans would like it, giving up puljujarvi and upping salary quite a bit

I don't want to move RNH but this is the type of proposal that would make me consider it. Sekera comes back and is united with Faulk and Drasaitl and Rask centre the 2nd and 3rd lines. Admittedly I don't know much about Rask, does he play any wing?

Whether salary retention would be appropriate is one thing. But I've got to believe that most objective observers would view Nuge's contract going forward ($6m per for 4 years) as being much too high. Forget trade talk and consider if he were a UFA: would you offer him an extension of $6m per for 4 years to stay with the Oilers?

I'm surprised a Canes fan proposed this, this is selling low on Faulk and buying high on RNH which doesn't seem wise. In theory it addresses both teams needs tho and its not terrible.
