Why do we judge athletes more on their performance?

We tend to view them more as an athlete rather than both an athlete and a regular person out on the street. It's the classic high school popularity story. Just look at Ray Rice, Slava Voynov, and even the UCLA basketball players who got caught shoplifting in China, what do they all have in common?

Bad choices and poor decision making: Now, I'm not saying that all athletes commit crimes, but just look at where they are now:

Rice: Out of the league
Voynov: Free Agent (pending)
UCLA basketball players: Still playing basketball
