I'd argue he has a better chance next year when teams don't have to surrender a draft pick. Why does he do this? Abreu had a really solid year and this seems like his best bet for a big payday on a long term deal.

The market for 32 year old 1B/DH types isn't very big. He likely wouldn't have gotten near 18 million this year, and will very likely get more on an extension with the Sox than on the open market.Fair enough but another year older as well...
Odorizzi would've been the Keuchel of this offseason, I'm not surprised he accepted it.Well, I was wrong. Thought no one was going to accept the QO and 2 of them did.

Abreu likes it here and seems to like his role as team leader for kids
I suspect Sox/He will continue to work on long term deal
Very happy to have him back

That's been the consensus with him for a bit now. He's the one I expected would take it if anyone did. Odorizzi was a total shock.I get this feeling as well with regards to Abreu. I think they'll definitely work something out for him to stick past 2020.
The thinking is he'll end up with more money overall without the draft pick attached next year. Ballsy move. I like it.That's been the consensus with him for a bit now. He's the one I expected would take it if anyone did. Odorizzi was a total shock.
I'm always a fan of a guy betting on himself. Hope it works out.The thinking is he'll end up with more money overall without the draft pick attached next year. Ballsy move. I like it.
The QO amount is a nice cushion though. That might help these guys to stay calm during next year. The thinking is he'll end up with more money overall without the draft pick attached next year. Ballsy move. I like it.
