i understand hes a rookie and what not but watching the game last night from STL, what is the point in having him on the team if he's buried like he was for the last 10 mins when you're down 4-0? Being a Blues fan but looking forward to watching him play because i followed him during college hockey I was shocked to see Hartley bury him most of the game. I feel with this treatment the kid will end up in the AHL by the end of the year. I also looked a lot on twitter as a bunch of Flames fans were upset with this treatment also so im not he only one who noticed this. Yes i know game 2 but the kid lit it up pre season let him play the team isn't most likely going anywhere (no offense) but c'mon...send him to the AHL to let him play or play him in the show simple? better than rotting on the bench with ern and bollig

Get over it. Hartley knows what he is doing. Did the same thing with Backlund last year...Backlund ended up having a career year. It is not even a bad thing if he ends up in the AHL anyways. There is a reason why he is a coach in the NHL and you(us) making a thread a hockey forum.

Most of the fans here with a few exceptions expected him to be sent down to the AHL eventually... it was a bit of a (pleasant) surprise with Gaudreau making the opening night roster.
It doesn't matter if he is a hotshot prospect or not - every player on a team has a role to play and it's pretty obvious that Gaudreau's role is a sheltered PP-specialist and all Calgary fans should understand how Hartley wants to run the team game.

Gaudreau might grow in time (no pun intended) to take on a larger role but there's no point in rushing him, especially if as you say, the Flames are going nowhere. Because he is undersized, I personally he needs more time to observe the pace and flow of the NHL level. 50% of the reason why why he is such an intriguing player is because of his hands - the other 50%, the most important aspect, is his brain. But even the smartest minds need time to analyze their respective environments before understanding how best to take the next step.

He just isn't strong enough yet, I fully believe in Hartley's ability to develop young players. Fact of the matter is he really is not ready yet.

did he basically make it because of Bennett's injury?

Nothing to do with Bennett. Bennett is a centre. The Flames felt like he outplayed Baertschi. Furthermore, Gaudreau isn't on a 9-game NHL limit so whether he stayed or went made no difference - his contract is ticking.

i have a buddy who played on his line in high school. he claims he demanded a contract last year asap to get that thing ticking. He said if he's unhappy after 2 years there he's the type of guy that would be a pain in the butt kinda like ROR in COL

I agree with the starter of the topic. He should have been given all of Hudler's minutes, on top of his usual ice-time./ No Hudler, no winning, is how I see things here.

not exactly saying to this extreme. However, when you're getting dominated by the blues down 4-0 how does he not touch the ice? is he really that big of a liability at that time?

Gaudreau's allegedly been battling the flue in the last couple of days. That could be the reason for his tentative play and lack of ice time.

But I agree with the premise of the thread; Gaudreau needs to play a certain amount, either in the NHL or in the AHL.

Too bad that it's not a valid source. I'm not saying it's not true - it's really not my business how someone wants to conduct their life or business relationships. But it's actually not a valid source in any way, shape, or form and therefore irrelevant to the discussion. Being a "pain in the butt" only goes so far because he is bound contractually by more than just what the contract denominates as his required obligation to the Flames - if he finds himself unhappy, he still finds himself under the shadow of the CBA and would either have to accept an RFA deal or not play in the NHL so long as the Flames tender a legitimate contract offer for him to consider.

Always earned; never given.

If Johnny had played like he did his first game in Vancouver (last season) he'd have more ice time.
If he isn't playing at that level yet than he needs to find a way to get there in the minutes he has earned.

I have no idea if the flu is factoring into his ice time but he's definitely getting sheltered minutes right now (12 minutes a game). I'd imagine he'll be up around 15 minutes within a month. Hartley seems like the type of coach who eases rookies into it.

Monahan went from 11 minutes to 21 minutes within his first three weeks in the NHL, although he did have 9 points during that period while Gaudreau has zero thus far. I'd imagine once Gaudreau shows more confidence or a few flashes of brilliance and puts up a few points, he'll be getting more minutes. But Hartley's not going to just hand them to him.

Whoever it was above who said Hartley is using him as a PP specialist I have to respectfully disagree... there's been several PPs in which Gaudreau didn't see the ice so far this season.

Did the blues immediately give Tarasenko 18 minutes per game?

actually they gave him about 15 mins a night his first year. Tarasenko isn't in the same as Johnny in terms of the player he was breaking into the league. More seasoned and has way more strength then him. Never said Johnny should get 18 mins a night did I?

Tarasenko actually got closer to 13 minutes a night in his rookie season. Should expect the same with Gaudreau, especially this early on (which was the point I wanted to make).

Johnny will earn his minutes. His college dominance means nothing to Hartley. JG is a great player, he will prove it to Hartley soon enough. It's only been 3 games into the season, and although Johnny hasn't scored any points yet, it's his rookie season. If you were expecting him to score a point per game right when he stepped on NHL ice, then I don't know what to tell you.

Let him adjust without too much pressure immediately. Get mostly PP time for a while while he learns the NHL fundamentals. Not a big deal

I think the OP must be new to hockey, because any long time fans knows that 2 things are certain in life.

1. Death
2. Hockey games getting chippy in the 3rd paeriod of a game that is out of reach.

#2 is why Gaudreau played little in the third.
