Not a leafs fan, and I haven't seen much of JML playing over the last season and a half, but I know he was always a pretty good player in Colorado. I see you guys have him in the AHL, what is the reason for that? I know you have some young kids who have earned spots, but just wondering what his issues are b/c as an Isles fan, we are STRUGGLING for a semi capable defenseman, and I think his veteran presence would really benefit our young ****heads. Any info is appreciated.

He's a capable top 6 offensive d-man.

The issue is that he just doesn't fit our system at all. He's on the softer side and is smaller.

We also already have Gardiner, Rielly and Franson as OFD up with the club and all kind of bring more to the table.

If youre a team looking for offense on the backend he's worth it, but he's more of PP specialist #5-6 guy now.

He didn't make the team out of camp as he wasn't seen as one of the top dmen and we were in a cap crunch.

Everyone is going to storm in and turn this into "Randy Carlyle is an idiot" thread, but there's no denying the reason he's in the AHL is what I've described above.

If it was up to me he would have been up the whole year. Can't say the same about the other candidates, except Phaneuf and Gunner.

Personally, I don't think he'd be in the AHL if we weren't in a cap crunch to start the season. His demotion was pretty much a foregone conclusion coming into camp.

Yea unfortunately our whole defense is basically small and soft, but with Visnovsky set to return who knows when, we need another offensive Dman, and are in DIRE need of a PP quarterback. The few responses seem to make me think he's still a fine player, and granted its the AHL, I see he does have 12 points and is a +10 in 15 games.

I watched a few mins of a Marlies game on the weekend and JML was just toying around in the offensive zone. He wound up scoring a goal on a nice pass from Abbott? I think.

I shake my head every time Carlyle says he would like more offense from his D. I'm not an NHL coach but I can see a possible solution when it is staring me in the face.

Rather have Liles in the lineup then Ranger.

Yeah, cause Liles can clear the front of the net like nobodies business! :sarcasm:

NOT.

He's too small and lacks the physical aspect needed to play solid defensive minutes.

We have Gardiner and Reilly to move the puck, we don't need Liles at the moment!

I agree to a degree and certainly if we looked organized on defense I would say ride it out. However the team is really out of synch and you owe it to the fans to explore any possible solution to make yourself better. It could flop huge yes, but you gave it a shot.

he was on waivers. even colorado didn't want him, which was strange to me. they could easily work out a deal for him as he's a cap hit on us.

i like him a lot. he can control and move the puck, great timing, NEVER complained. i like him better than 2 or 3 of the d we have up.

Leafs Home Board
JML was placed on waivers earlier in the year and went unclaimed so that means either the player is bad or his contract is bad.

Liles could now be had by any team for the price of a phone call, and anyone taking him would be doing the Leafs a real favour to recover cap cost.

He wants more offense from his D, but if the D turn the puck over while trying to generate offence they get sat in the press box. A bit of a mixed message.

Thats right up our alley, we are constantly struggling to reach the cap floor. Instead we're forced to give idiots like Cal Clutterbuck 3 mil to reach that floor.

Nonis is eating the aftermath of Burke's strong-arm trading.

We got Franson+Lombardi for basically free because we aided Nashville's cap woes.

We got Gardiner+Lupul for Beauchemin, aiding Anaheim's cap woes.

Now we're the ones with cap woes, and Nonis isn't willing to pay the price to get out of it, and no other GM is crazy enough to scratch our backs for free.

It's like a game of hot potato, except everyone has giant tennis rackets and swat the potato back at us everytime we try and ditch it.

Between him and Brennan there are two great options.

Look, I'm a huge rIElly fan and I think he has been better than I expected defensively [I did have pretty low expectations given his age]. But, it is clear that he really doesn't have the composure to play on PP yet. Liles clearly can help in that particular aspect.
