That's basically, optimistically, a quarter of the budget the Royals can spend on free agents this off-season. $8 million may be the going rate for a solid reliever (same Steamer WAR projection as Madson for next season), the Royals do have needs to ensure their pen remains a strength and Soria is still only 31 years old but there's the injury history red flag, he didn't pitch as well as Madson last season and quite frankly I was hoping to address other areas first and go dumpster diving for some relief depth. Maybe you that's just not possible this off-season.

I think the biggest news here is they signed him through the 2018 season when virtually their entire core is FA after 2017.

Trade him @ 2017 deadline, or for season. More incentive since he'll have an extra year. Plus I don't believe he was taking anything less than 3 years, after 3 teams in 3 years.

Davis was great as closer, but I wonder if they put Soria back in his old role.
