Note: The Jets and Leafs play at MTS Centre tonight at 6pm so be sure to kick-off your pre-game coverage with the Illegal Curve Hockey Show. The show kicks off at noon (CST) until 3 pm on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. Guests: Michael Traikos (National Post), Scott Powers (ESPN Chicago) and Tom Lynn/Kyle Kosior (Veritas Hockey).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Dynamic duo. Both Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba have thrust themselves into the Calder conversation with their strong play this season. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger even took to twitter to tweet about Trouba yesterday saying “The more I watch Jacob Trouba, the more convinced I am he’s a strong Calder contender. 20+ mins in 25 of 35 games played. Turns 20 in Febâ€.
Trouba-on-the-blueline-300x157.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets better even when losing. Many pundits marveled following the loss at the complete game this team had played. It isn’t often that folks around here are talking positively about a loss and that was certainly the case after a tough, but well played game against the Sharks.

Winnipeg Free Press: Re-energized Jets flying high. We are going to be hearing the phrase ‘compete level’ for the next bit and it is evident that the Jets have raised it up a notch or two under their new head coach.

Winnipeg Free Press: Defensive back-pressure. J.P. Vigier is at the whiteboard again and this time he is drawing up a play that occurred in the Jets win over the Ducks.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets this week with Ed and Gary (video). Ed Tait and Gary Lawless comment how the Jets are buying in so far with a 4-1 record under head coach Paul Maurice, Byfuglien’s future on the wing and what moves (if any) Cheveldayoff should make before the trade deadline.
Buff-in-the-crease-300x166.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Jets find winning pair. The two have a familiarity that dates back quite awhile so there is an advantage in that comfort. Ken also looks at the hit on Trouba and the question as to which goalie plays in which game this weekend.

Winnipeg Sun: Maurice has Jets on right road. While everything seems rosy right now the Jets are still pretty high off the ‘newness’ of the coaching change. Will be interested to see where this team is in a few more weeks.

Leafs news:

National Post: Leafs getting used to walking tightropes. Winning one goal games seems to be in Toronto’s favour writes Michael Traikos who will be on today’s show to discuss the Leafs play this season.

Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs’ goalies beginning to look human. This team has been especially reliant on its goalies this season so if one or both have off nights it is going to be quite a long evening.

Toronto Sun: Defenceman Paul Ranger playing catch-up after being out of the game. When you take time away from the game it isn’t easy to just pick up and get back into it but the Ontario native is looking for his opportunity to get into the lineup.

Toronto Star: Maple Leafs look to end Western swing on high note. When fans looked at the four games on the Jets schedule (Ducks, Sharks, Leafs and Hawks) in this segment this was likely seen as the “easy†one. However this Leafs team won six straight games before Wednesday’s 7-1 shellacking at the hands of the Dallas Stars. Expect them to play with some serious bite today.

IceCaps news:

TSN: Samson scores twice as IceCaps edge Bruins. While the spectre of the move to Thunder Bay lingers the team won their second game in a row and first of the next five they play on the road.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: The bottom line: Top line must be a force. Coach Noel refused to take the bait during the media scrum to discuss the things his top line wasn’t doing instead choosing to focus on the positives the line brings to the ice. If both the 1st and 2nd lines could get going in the same game it would go a long way to getting this team in the win column.
1st-line-vs.-Sabres-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: About the Bruins. Some notes and the team rosters.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets should follow Boston model. Easy to say, another thing to do.

Winnipeg Sun: Despite Noel’s coy ploy, Pavelec gets call against Bruins. No word if he was wearing a vest but he sure tried to keep it close to it during the scrum. Unfortunately for the coach his goalie had revealed his choice.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel scrum. Looking back at the Ottawa game. Goaltending decision? Shutting down the Little/Ladd/Wheeler line down. Where was his top line lacking? How does Boston do it?

Bruins news:

Boston Herald: Torey Krug ready for inevitable rookie struggles. Interesting article on the Bruins prized rookie.

CSN New England: Hamilton doesn’t miss a beat after 10 games. Another young D-man for Boston is back and apparently quite able.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Thorburn ready for a fight. There was a lot of surprise when the rugged Jets winger took on the biggest, baddest Bruin of them all. Even more so that he acquitted himself rather well in the contest.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bruins’ hustle schools Jets. Assessing the loss with a look back at the lack of hitting, the margin for error, porous defence and now it gets tough.
Jets-vs.-Bruins-Dustin-Byfuglien-300x224.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: About the Pens. Some notes about the team the Jets face today and the rosters for the game.

Winnipeg Sun: Strike 2 for Jets on eastern road trip after matinee loss to Bruins. This could be quite the final strike if the Jets fail to rebound today in Steeltown.

Penguins news:

Pittsburgh Tribune: Pens GM Shero not looking for a rental player. Perhaps he is looking at a team with a number of players signed long term. Kane is mentioned in the article as is the fact that neither GM had spoken.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Bylsma on brink of tying Penguins mark for victories. Good news Jets fans is he cannot set the record against Winnipeg. Of course he can tie the record with a win.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets a bullet short in shootout. Unfortunately the Jets brought a BB gun to this gun fight with a team that is filled with heavy artillery.

Winnipeg Free Press: Penguins quick on the draw. While winning that draw ultimately led to the game winning goal there were numerous ways the Jets blew this game in the 3rd period.

Winnipeg Sun: Little things trip up Jets. In-game adjustments are necessary to prevent things like this happening. In this instance not being able to adapt led to the game winning goal.

Winnipeg Sun: Watching the Jets try to fly with Penguins painful stuff. While Pittsburgh certainly had a number of defensive lapses (that should be a concern for Pens fans) trying to get into a race with a team that has that much horsepower is a big, big mistake.

TSN: Jets pay the price for giving Pens chance after chance. From his perch up in the press box Dennis assess the Jets 6-5 loss to the Penguins.

Pittsburgh Tribune: Morning Java. The senior writer for the Tribune with a noted affinity for all things Winnipeg writes some very interesting tidbits about the Penguins players assessment of the Jets and their ‘system’ (or lack thereof). Very notable and somewhat surprising that another team’s veteran players are prepared to make such statements.
Coach-Noel-practice-300x200.jpg

IceCaps news:

The Telegram: IceCaps scuttle Pirates 3-1 in AHL play. While the parent club is struggling things are going well down on the farm as they ripped off their third straight win on home ice and fourth in last five games. Eddie Pasquale had another good game winning his 13th game of the season.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Enough of Buff and his gaffes and giveaways. Coach Noel intimated that while the mistakes are glaring there are usually a number of other mistakes that are made on the play that don’t receive the same attention. He isn’t wrong. While Buff has made some glaring errors with the puck if you re-watch any goal against the Jets oftentimes you see it is the result of a breakdown earlier in the play. But in today’s column Gary pushes for a move of the big defenceman.
Dustin-Byfuglien-2-wm-300x110.jpg

Edmonton Journal: If Winnipeg Jets move Dustin Byfuglien, the Edmonton Oilers need to be the destination. Gary's column has Oilers nation a little excited.

Winnipeg Free Press: Men without hats. The Jets have a number of guys who have close to hitting the three goal mark but there just hasn’t been an occasion for fans to celebrate the first hatty in Jets 2.0 history. If we are gonna see one, which player is most likely to get it done?

Winnipeg Free Press: Coming home is cold comfort. Well the good news for the team is they have spread out games (tonight, then Saturday) so they can sit at home and recover.

Winnipeg Free Press: Ladd more concerned about Jets than Olympic glory. While the Jets captain has been good this season he hasn’t done enough to garner addition to Team Canada.

Winnipeg Sun: There’s plenty of blame to go around. All one has to do is re-watch a goal against the Jets to see that there is usually ample blame to go around.

Winnipeg Sun: Changes should start with Byfuglien and Noel. Paul raises some interesting points in his column this morning. What do you think? Who would you start with?

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel scrum. Conversation touched on: Upbeat for a guy who has lost three straight. Byfuglien talk; Is he trying to do too much? Is there anything wrong with the system? Why can’t they get consistency? Does this team have an identity? Does he feel like the team is closer to achieving this goal? Thoughts on Tampa Bay. Olympic talk. Injury updates.

Illegal Curve: Jets on the Czech Olympic team. It came as no surprise that Pavelec and Frolik were both named to the squad.

Illegal Curve: What is Michael Frolik worth? Richard assess what sort of contract the RFA this summer might earn.

Lightning news:

Tampa Bay Times: Bishop to miss game against Jets. The Bolts have surprised many with their play this season sitting 4th in the East without Steven Stamkos. The team hopes this injury is not too serious.

Tampa Bay Tribune: St. Louis awaits Team Canada fate. If you thought the dissection of the US team was intense just wait till 10 am this morning when Team Canada is announced. Would you have St. Louis on your team?

Note: Tune into NHL Mid-Week on TSN 1290 Winnipeg tonight from 6-8 pm as the guys discuss all the latest NHL news including the Olympics and of course Team Canada.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Winnipeg Free Press: River City problems. Ed breaks down some different facets of the game including a wounded (in spirit) St. Louis, depression in Winnipeg, low shot totals and still no system.
Marty-St.-Louis-scores-300x191.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Noel knows Olympics a character-builder, but a taxing one. From the sounds of it his team could use the break to recoup from a heavy season.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets apologetic for pathetic performance. Players were at wits end last night in post-game interviews. I’ve never really heard the team speak like this before. It will be interesting to see how the team rebounds this week.

Winnipeg Sun: Setoguchi in Noel’s crosshairs after another Jets loss. It was not a banner game for the Jets forward who saw his ice time fall to an all season low. He played a total of two seconds in the 2nd period. Clearly coach Noel was sending a message.

Winnipeg Sun: The Incredible Journey — a Sun columnist’s extended road trip. First Buffalo News columnist Mike Harrington had a quest in and out of the Peg’ and following close on his heels is Paul Friesen. In both instances not sure either would say the games they saw were worth the trip.

Global Winnipeg: Jets left off Canadian Olympic roster. Captain Ladd acknowledged that he hasn’t done enough this season to merit inclusion on the list of players heading to Russia to represent this country.

TSN: Empty game. From high atop the ice surface Dennis Beyak called the game and reflects on the loss in this article.

IceCaps news:

TSN: Pasquale’s spectacular save preserves IceCaps win over Pirates. The boys down on the farm continue to roll and goalie Eddie Pasquale is sure proving that he merits some attention. (see below).

Lightning 4 Jets 2:

Winnipeg Jets: Ondrej Pavelec, Tobias Enstrom, Mark Scheifele and Mark Stuart.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Coach Cooper and Martin St. Louis.

Coach Noel post-game. Coach Noel met with the media following the game against Tampa Bay.

Postgame Podcast. Host Drew Mindell and analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Lightning this evening.

Jets on a Deadline. Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Ailing Jets sink to new low. What would you do? If you are the GM and can make any decision you’d like what would be your first move? Coaching change? Trade? Nothing? Sound off.

Winnipeg Free Press: If Noel axed, he shouldn’t go alone… leaders share the blame. Always easier to make one move to remove the coach than it is to completely re-build a team. Looks like GM Cheveldayoff might have some thinking to do in the next little bit.
Andrew-Ladd-610x290-300x142.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Jets rotten core. There certainly is a lot of negativity which coincides nicely with the Jets four game losing streak.

Winnipeg Sun: Fairmont sweet on Stamkos; cake sent up to celebrate making Team Canada. A nice move by the Fairmont Winnipeg.

CBC: Coach not happy with ‘way’ Jets are losing. How can he be? The team seems aimless and he must be beside himself trying to rectify the situation.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: A new home for 33? And no this doesn’t mean on another team. Instead the Jets big man was up at forward at practice yesterday. This was done, in part, because Kane, Wheeler and Ladd were not on the ice for Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Free Press: Confidence reigns supreme for Jets. Fans had to like the tone of their coach yesterday. There wasn’t any defeatist in his voice.

Winnipeg Free Press: Notebook. Breaking down some Jets stories including getting Setoguchi back on track, injury updates and recharging batteries.
Setoguchi-in-warm-up-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: No time to worry. I hear Coach Noel speak almost every day and I thought he sounded unusually resolved yesterday. It didn’t come across as false bravado either.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets can’t afford not to move Dustin Byfuglien to forward. While he could be an absolute force if moved up front the question with Big Buff is all about will and desire. He is on record saying he wants to play defence. However yesterday he also said that he will do whatever it takes to help the team win. Should be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel scrum (audio). Growing frustration in the fanbase. Dustin Byfuglien as a forward? Where were missing players (Ladd, Wheeler – flu, Kane – maintenance). Pressure on him from social media? Facing a new challenge. Process of figuring out how to change the fortunes of this team. Happy with the leadership group of his team? More player discussion ending with Setoguchi talk. Injury update (Postma – waiting for him to cleared for contact. Slater – feeling better, above 50%, getting closer. Clitsome – slow process, not close. Halischuk – a few weeks away).

Note III: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show today on TSN 1290 Winnipeg from noon until 3 pm. We have an action packed show including a look ahead to tonight’s Jets/Blue Jackets game and all the rest of the news from across the NHL. Guests: Aaron Portzline (Columbus Dispatch), Tyson Nash (Coyotes TV Analyst), Frank Provenzano (ESPN.com) and Mike Harrington (Buffalo News).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Bogo struggles with ‘next step’. The injuries have certainly slowed down his development but provided he can stay healthy fans have to hope he is able to continue to develop to where the expectations for his career are.

Winnipeg Free Press: Neutral-zone turnover = scoring chance. J.P. Vigier breaks down one play that hurt the Jets. He gives you the players, sets the scene, gives you the situation, details the turnover, provides a breakdown, further details an additional breakdown and then gives his insight.

Winnipeg Sun: Buff lines up with Little, Ladd. Hopefully it last longer than the last time coach Noel decided to try it (April 4, 2013 against the Habs). In that last instance Buff played forward to start the game but ended as a defenceman and it wasn’t a good little experiment.

Winnipeg Sun: Desperate to give fans something to cheer about. Not a lot of joy in joyland these days. Paul also looks at Wheeler’s move to 3rd line, Kane’s latest injury, Redmond’s call up and an assessment of Bogosian.
Kane-fights-Brewer-300x145.jpg

Illegal Curve: Coach Claude Noel scrum. Desperate times call for desperate measures (moving Buff up front). Is his heart in it? What is the challenge in switching position? Reasons for the move. Dustin has resisted playing forward, where is his head at? Switching up the lines. Monitoring minutes. Getting O’Dell an opportunity to produce. Refreshing the lineup. Kane injury news. Sick players (Wheeler/Ladd) better? Is he happy with Zach Bogosian’s growth/development?

TSN 1290 Winnipeg: Hustler & Lawless. Missed this yesterday as Gary and Hust spoke with Pierre LeBrun on Thursday about the current state of the Jets.

Blue Jackets news:

TSN: Blue Jackets cool off red-hot Hurricanes with shutout. Columbus faced a Carolina team that had played the previous night and they took it to them. Now the Jets have the opportunity to return the favour.

IceCaps news:

The Telegram: IceCaps come up short against Marlies in AHL play. It was too little too late for the farm club as their 3rd period comeback attempt fell short.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Byfuglien adjusting to new role as forward; true test comes tonight. His enthusiasm was clearly curbed today following practice. He didn’t sound overly enthusiastic but he also said the right things and we shall see with his play on the ice if the big man is ready to commit to his new role.
Buff-dances-a-jig-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: A wing and a prayer. Coach Noel refused to admit that it was a desperate move and the truth is based on what this team has available and absent Evander Kane and with Blake Wheeler’s status unknown, there really weren’t a ton of options.

TSN: Jets host Blue Jackets for second and final time. Brian takes a look at the game story for the Blue Jackets and Jets.

Illegal Curve: Game day set-up between Jets & Jackets. Ez sets up the game tonight including projected lineups, starting goalies, game notes and more.

Jets pre-game audio:

Illegal Curve: Jets players pre-game audio. Hear from Dustin Byfuglien and Zach Bogosian in advance of the game tonight against the Blue Jackets.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel pre-game. Should Buff be better prepared to play forward than last year? Buff not being over enthusiastic, is there something coach can do to increase that? Adjusting Buffs minutes. Kane’s status (not a player). Expectations on O’Dell. Thoughts on Columbus. How different are they with Horton? What does he want to see from his team tonight? A greater reliance on the top four?

Sportsnet: Problems in the 'Peg begin with stars. Pretty strong words by Mark Spector.

USA Today: Jets fire coach Claude Noel, hire Paul Maurice. Kevin Allen discusses the moves the Jets made and the ones they need to make.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets not trending in right direction. Chevy felt like the time was right to make a move. What do you think?

Winnipeg Free Press: Fans react to firing of Noel with surprise, optimism. Considering the way fans were streaming out of the MTS Centre last night this isn’t a shocker.

Winnipeg Free Press: Line changes change nothing. It wasn’t a banner evening in Winnipeg yesterday.
Another-goal-against-Jets-300x162.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Noel wasn’t right fit for Jets. Do you think another coach will have a big impact on this roster?

Winnipeg Sun: Byfuglien escapes blame for loss. This was a collective team loss.

NHL.com: Goal prevention led to Noel's downfall. Corey Masisak breaks down one of the reasons.

NHL.com: With Noel gone, scrutiny shifts to Jets players. The players are going to feel some heat this season.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Reading between the lines. Tim reads between the lines of yesterday’s presser at what Chevy said and what he really meant.

Winnipeg Free Press: Heading for new skies. The Jets are closer to the bottom of the standings than they are a post season position so it is not going to be easy to get this fixed.
Bogo-Noel-chat-300x156.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Coach’s challenge. The truth is this won’t be a slam dunk for coach Maurice. It is going to take some blood, sweat and tears (and possibly trades) before he can get this ship back on track.

Winnipeg Sun: Ken’s thoughts on the firing and hiring. Ken came back from Mexico and hits the ground running as he pens this piece on all the moves made yesterday.

Winnipeg Sun: Winnipeg Jets Did Chevy do enough to help Noel succeed? Paul breaks down the presser and gives his thoughts on the move.

Winnipeg Sun: New Jets coach Maurice already on familiar ground. It certainly going to be a trial by fire for the new Jets coach as he gets off the plane and immediately ends up participating in a Jets game day today.

Winnipeg Sun: Players know they will be next to pay price. Olli Jokinen said it best “I think everyone knows what is going to happens next if things don’t go well…the players are going to get shipped outâ€. If this team continues to spiral downward you can bet that GM Cheveldayoff will be making some moves to ship some of these players out of town for future assets.
Seto-Buff-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Fans split on nixing Noel. One thing you have to credit our fans with is passion. While sometimes it can be a bit intense they certainly care about this team and have an opinion on what the best moves for this organization are. As Olli Jokinen said yesterday there are “15000 GMs watching the gamesâ€.

CBC: Is Maurice a quick fix or a move for long term success? Which do you think it is? He is only signed until the end of the summer as both he and the club will have a chance to evaluate the other during the next few months.

Globe and Mail: The quote machine has been shut down in Winnipeg. For every Jets scrum with coach Noel I usually referenced his no(el)table quotes and that is going away. Roy pens an excellent column on the departure of the bench boss.

Sportsnet: Problems in the ‘Peg begin with stars. Pretty strong words by Mark Spector.

USA Today: Jets fire coach Claude Noel, hire Paul Maurice. Kevin Allen discusses the moves the Jets made and the ones they need to make.

NHL.com: Goal prevention led to Noel’s downfall. Corey Masisak breaks down one of the reasons that he felt led to coach Noel’s dismissal.

Arizona Republic: Shane Doan says Phoenix Coyotes are ‘not very good’. The Jets 1.0 sit well above 2.0 in the standings (with three games in hand) but are in the midst of a slide.

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice brings wealth of experience to Jets bench. In addition to gusto and intensity. Should be interesting to see what sort of changes he can implement with this group.

Winnipeg Free Press: ‘Feels a like a bit of a fresh start’ says Bogosian. Not expecting miracles on the ice but most players acknowledge that there is a clean sheet of ice.
Jokinen-at-practice-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Maurice makes strong first impression. Ken gives you his initial thoughts on the new bench boss for Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Sun: Game day. It was like the first day of school for the players and even the media as they got to know the new coach of the team.

ESPN: Can Paul Maurice help Jets climb? Requires you to be an ESPN Insider to read full article but Craig Custance gives a bit of background on this situation and spoke with Coach Maurice’s former GM about the new bench boss.

TSN: History will be made as Maurice takes Jets’ reins. Brian gives you his take on tonight’s Jets and Coyotes game.

Sportsnet: Discovering what Jets are made of (video). GM Kevin Cheveldayoff joined the panel this afternoon to discuss the moves his organization has made.

Hockey's Future: Deep defence at the heart of Jets professional system. Breaking down the Jets prospects.

Illegal Curve: Coach Paul Maurice first presser (audio). Opening remarks. Is he a patient man? Taking us through past few days. First impressions of the hockey club. What are his goals? What did he think of his time in Russia and why did he come back? How does he plan to get these players to play a consistent game? What was the reason he chose the Jets? Does he like the challenge of turning things around. How much better is this team than its record? Thoughts on his roster. What will the experience in Toronto be worth for a market like Winnipeg? What might fans see different on the ice tonight? What is his philosophy on goalies? Thoughts on Dustin Byfuglien. Where does his passion for hockey come from? On being a disciplinarian.

Illegal Curve: Players pre-game scrum (audio). Hear from Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, Chris Thorburn and Mark Scheifele who talk mostly about the new coach and tonight’s game against the Coyotes.

Jets news:

CBC: Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts. It is quite the Winnipeg Jets affair today as they get the preamble as well as the first five of his 30 Thoughts.

Winnipeg Free Press: Playing for Maurice a learning experience. He certainly engaged his players a lot on the bench. Will be curious to see if he maintains this for the rest of the season.
Maurice-talks-to-Bogosian-300x158.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: First, the good news… Paul Maurice loves a challenge. Which team did we see last night because that didn’t seem like the Winnipeg Jets we have watched all season long. While the team showed some gumption last night, can this be maintained?

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets notes. Some players have had a lot of head coaches whereas others are getting their first experience with same. Also in the article they mention the Jets announced a night to promote mental health awareness.

Winnipeg Sun: Ladd provides coach Maurice with memento after win in Jets debut. It will go with his Hartford Whalers puck and should serve as a nice memory of his first game in Winnipeg. Jets fans hope it is the first of many.
Maurice-chats-with-Ladd-and-Little-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Maurice has open mind on Winnipeg Jets goaltenders. He just wants someone to step up and help this team. Seemed to shed the concern about labels (i.e. #1 and backup) in favour of the novel concept of seeing someone step up to win games.

Winnipeg Sun: Paul Maurice brings palpable intensity, confidence to Jets. He hit the ground running yesterday and both of these words aptly describe the feeling that many felt within the media press conference held at the MTS Centre.

TSN: Jets up their game in Maurice’s debut. From high atop the ice surface Dennis gives you his insight into last night’s contest.

CBC: Jets fans have hope for new coach Paul Maurice. Fans were asked to react to the hiring at the MTS Centre last night and not surprisingly the responses were optimistic.

Illegal Curve: Jets lift suspension of Ivan Telegin and assign him to KHL. Somewhat lost in all the insanity of yesterday was news that the Jets lifted the suspension of the Russian forward. No reason was given and the Jets didn’t send out a release.

Hockey’s Future: Deep defence at the heart of Jets professional system. Breaking down the Jets prospects.

Jets 5 Coyotes 1:

Winnipeg Jets: Andrew Ladd, Ondrej Pavelec, Zach Bogosian and Michael Frolik.

Phoenix Coyotes: Coach Tippett, Shane Doan and David Moss.

Note: Tune into NHL Mid-Week tonight from 6-8 pm on TSN 1290 Winnipeg for all the latest Jets and NHL news.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Wounded hand keeps Winnipeg’s Kane off ice. Not really sure why the conspiracy theorists were out in full force yesterday when Kane didn’t skate. He has an injured hand which would make holding a stick difficult. Nothing too sinister about that.
Evander-kane-4-610x290-wm-300x142.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice content to let Buff roam at forward — for now. Until he has a few more healthy bodies up front it makes sense to keep Buff up at forward.

Winnipeg Free Press: Noel’s note to successor shows ‘quality of the man’ he is. Coach Noel is a class act and continued to demonstrate that during what could only be described as a incredibly difficult time in his professional career.

Winnipeg Free Press: New boss takes charge. Nice little power move to cancel the day off and get the guys on the ice to put them through some drills.

Winnipeg Sun: Just roll with it. If it works not point in changing it.

Winnipeg Sun: Pace is high for Jets 1st practice under Maurice. He knows that there was a lot of emotion in that first game and is going to need to ensure he puts his brand on this time right away.

CBC: Jets launch season-ticket campaign. Now we get to see what sort of renewal rates the Jets can garner from season ticket holders?

CBC: Elliotte Friedman’s 30 Thoughts. A late addition yesterday. It is quite the Winnipeg Jets affair today as they get the preamble as well as the first five of his 30 Thoughts.

Globe and Mail: Monitor allows teams to push players to physical limit. Not specifically about the Jets, however Winnipeg is mentioned as one team looking into the technology.

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice scrum. The note left by Coach Noel. Will he reach out to Claude? Skill of the team and allowing the players to flourish. First win make it an easier transition? Status of Evander Kane. Intense practice. New impressions of Buff? Time limit on when he decides where he is going to play Buff? Different impressions after a few days? Thoughts on the leadership of this team.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Does Paul Maurice really have a prescription for what ails the Jets? When you listen to the new bench boss speak you can tell he is a man with a plan but you can also hear him implying this won’t be a quick fix.

Winnipeg Free Press: Frequent flyer Postma taking special precautions. Good to hear that he is almost ready to resume playing. Never easy for a player to have to sit out this long.

Winnipeg Free Press: New boss is demanding; wants Jets to be faster, smarter. These players are quickly learning that this coach is not going to be a walk in the park.

Winnipeg Sun: O’Dell moving on up. He was the leading scorer for the AHL IceCaps and is now going to get an opportunity to demonstrate some of that flash in the NHL as he moves up to the 3rd line.
ODell-scores-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: With new coach Paul Maurice, the bar is raised for Winnipeg Jets. I liked his answer when he spoke about how the team was likely feeling after their 5-1 thrashing of the Coyotes and what would happen to them if they didn’t put that game behind them.

CBC: Jets launch season-ticket campaign. If you missed the news, yesterday the Jets started off their campaign to renew season tickets. Good timing.

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice scrum. Status of Setoguchi (under the weather) and Kane (“not there yet, a deep cut). Stringing some wins together, does he have the prescription? Focus on other teams or focus on his team? Talk about the Flames. His practice style. Assessment of draft picks. Getting to know the players. Concept of excellence.

Flames news:

Calgary Herald: Praise continues to pile up for hottest Flame, Mikael Backlund. If you haven’t watched any Calgary games this year be sure to watch out for him as he has been ripping it up lately.

Note: With tomorrow being a 1 pm start time for the Jets and Oilers at MTS Centre the Illegal Curve Hockey Show will be starting at 7 am until 10 pm on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. Plenty to discuss so be sure to set your radio dial bright and early on Saturday.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets soar over Flames. You hate to be a Debbie Downer but we should remind everyone that the Flames are a terrible team. While it is important to win you sometimes need a slight dose of reality. This wasn’t St. Louis, L.A. or Chicago. Having said that the team still played a pretty good game and a number of players continued to bring their ‘A’ game.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets-Flames summary. Pavelec made some good saves although none was bigger than the save he made in the 3rd period with the Jets up 4-1 at point-blank range. Soon thereafter rookie Jacob Trouba put the game away.

Winnipeg Free Press: Teemu, Ducky… Mark? He moved ahead of Sharks rookie Tomas Hertl for sole possession of 4th spot amongst rookies and continued his blazing hot streak.
Mark-Scheifele-at-Training-Camp-Day-1-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Jets clobber Calgary. If Jets fans thought their team had problems, say hello to the Calgary Flames.

Calgary Herald: Flames’ home-ice skid hits record seven games. Just to keep things in perspective this is the squad the Jets beat up on last night.

Calgary Herald: New coach Maurice eager to help Jets take flight. Interesting perspective on the new Jets bench boss.

TSN: Power Rankings. Big drop from 14 to 24 although this doesn’t take into account the wins over Phoenix and Calgary.

Sportsnet: Hockey Central – Trade tracker Olli Jokinen (video). The panel discussed the Jets centre, whether there would be a market for him and possible destinations.

Jets 5 Flames 2:

Coach Paul Maurice post-game: Coach Maurice met with the media following the game against Calgary.

Jets on a Deadline: Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

IceCaps news:

The Telegram: The numbers add up for the IceCaps, why don’t the wins? Win a couple, lose a couple. Never heard that before. Seems both parent and farm clubs are following similar paths this season.

Note III: With today being a 1 pm start time for the Jets and Oilers at MTS Centre the Illegal Curve Hockey Show will be starting at 7 am until 10 am (CST) on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. Guests: John Forslund (Play by Play voice of Carolina Hurricanes) and Slava Malamud (Sports Express).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: The numbers don’t lie. And they have not been kind to Ondrej Pavelec. While his defence hasn’t always been first rate there is clearly no question that the Jets goalie need to be better.

Winnipeg Free Press: Movin’ on up. Coach Maurice alluded to fact that they used statistical analysis to put that line together but didn’t expand upon it much more than that.
Frolik-scores-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Buff can’t help but be beguiling. He has helped to balance out the lines and give the Jets more scoring help up front.

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice sees similarities in Jets, Oilers. The Jets are still looking to pay back the Oilers for a 6-2 loss in Edmonton back on December 23rd in which there was a lot of post-whistle festivities and Nail Yakupov gave Pavelec a little head shot.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets this Week (video). Ed Tait and Tim Campbell share their thoughts on the coaching change, Dustin Byfuglien at forward and who may benefit the most from a new coach.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets find playing solid defence produces winning results. Having a better transition from defence to offence has had a major impact during the past couple of games. Of course we shall see what happens next week when the Jets head to Cali to play Anaheim and L.A.. then play Toronto and Chicago.
Zach-Bogosian-tees-it-up-300x134.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Jets won’t get to Nail Yakupov and other notes. Jets and fans were irate when the first overall pick nailed Ondrej Pavelec back on December 23rd in Edmonton. Ken also discusses the injury to Grant Clitsome and Klingberg being returned to the AHL.

Winnipeg Sun: It’s tough to be a fan of the Jets, Oilers and Flames these days. It is clearly not easy being a fan of any of these three teams in the last little bit. The Oilers have the most fan fare with all those top picks but don’t say that too loudly in Oil country.

SI.com: Jets fans rank no. 10 in fan misery. Further to the above article SI ranks fan misery across the NHL and Jets fans you’ve made the top 10. They look at the trademark torment, the most notorious moments in the franchise (3 of 5 are Thrashers based), current misfortune, in the system and better days ahead?

TSN: Hustler & Lawless (audio). Pierre LeBrun joined the show on Thursday to discuss the impact that coach Paul Maurice will make on the Jets culture.

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice scrum. Generating offence from the defence. Struggling in day games. On his relationship with Dallas Eakins. His relationship with former Oilers coach Ralph Krueger. How did he arrive at Frolik with Ladd/Little? Being back in the NHL and KHL talk. His relationship with Mike Keenan. Oilers talk. Jets team speed.

Oilers news:

Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky’s status in doubt. A tough loss for the Oilers.

Edmonton Sun: Defence is a work in progress for the Oilers, with little sign of actual progress. If you think the Jets D has problems go check out what is happening in Edmonton for real issues.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler working overtime. Some players are shootout specialists and it appears that the tall winger is developing a knack for being in the right place at the right time in the extra frame.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets’ overtime win against Oilers shows power of youth. The kids are alright. Following the game I asked Mark Scheifele why he seems to score in the same game as Jacob Trouba and his response (with a wry grin) was “healthy competitionâ€.
Trouba-gets-OT-winner-300x169.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Young guns had help. The play of wily vets helped to get the rookies the puck to be in a position for success.

Winnipeg Sun: Big Buff has found his place. While it is clear that Big Buff can be a force up front the question is will he be happy there? Article also covers Jets fans chanting at Bryz, Wright still looking for that first goal, believing in themselves and around the glass.

Winnipeg Sun: Scheifele ends goal drought. He had eight road goals this season and the MTS Centre crowd finally got a chance to cheer the 2011 1st round pick as he potted his first home regulation goal.

TSN: Jets extend win streak with overtime victory. From his perch high above the ice surface Dennis gives you his insight into the Jets win.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane, Jets have fun practice. Let’s hope they enjoyed the fun to close out the weekend because the competition over the next few games is going to really put this team to the test.

Winnipeg Sun: Kane on track to return to Jets lineup. He seemed good at practice and Coach Maurice indicated that he will be returning to full practice today before the team departs for California.

Winnipeg Sun: ‘Fighting’s part of game’: Jets’ Kane. No question what side of the issue that Evander Kane is on when it comes to the issue of fighting in hockey. While he admitted that he hasn’t had too many in his career he acknowledged that it is important part of the game.
Kane-fighting-Brewer-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Jets fourth-liner still looking for first goal of season. It has been a long drought for James Wright. So much so that I joked during the open practice that the drought had ended as he finally put one in the net. Coach Maurice hasn’t lost faith in the 4th liner saying that due to the minutes he plays aren’t the most conducive to scoring.

Winnipeg Sun: Six Jets get day off. Didn’t sound like it was anything to be too worried about that the Jets (Ladd, Little, Wheeler, Enstrom, Jokinen & Ellerby) who weren’t on the ice. Also some ‘Around the Glass’ notes.

Edmonton Journal: This N That. Buff is mentioned in Jim Matheson's column (6th paragraph).

Illegal Curve: A pictorial summation of the Jets open practice. There were plenty of kids in attendance at the MTS Centre and they got quite the treat from the Jets as they got to watch the players participate in drills and then got throw autographed Jets memorabilia.
Open-Practice-10-300x200.jpg

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice scrum. Status of players who didn’t participate today (Wheeler, Ladd, Little, Enstrom, Jokinen, Ellerby). Kane update. Postma status. The open practice. Upcoming road trip. His contract with the Jets. Choosing being a coach vs. being on TV. Quick talk on Cgy/Van. James Wright goalless drought.

Illegal Curve: Jets audio from practice. Hear from Chris Thorburn, Jacob Trouba and Evander Kane.

IceCaps news:

The Telegram: Inconsistent IceCaps on display again. The parent and farm clubs seem to mirror each other quite a bit this season.

Jets news:

CBC: 30 Thoughts. Number 21 touches on Jets defenceman Tobias Enstrom and his production.

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane will skate with Wheeler, Scheifele against Ducks. Yesterday coach Maurice confirmed that Evander would be good to go for tonight’s game. He was a bit mysterious however, suggesting that if that line didn’t work he had another pairing for Kane that would work.

Winnipeg Free Press: Father-son journey for Jets. I’m sure the family members or friends (It isn’t limited to bringing your dad) are gonna have a nice little trip to Cali. Coach Maurice spoke of the importance of giving insight into the lifestyle of a hockey player to family and friends who might not understand the rigors of playing professional hockey.

Winnipeg Free Press: Moving Buff up front just as good as a trade. Coach Maurice loves the versatility that Big Buff gives him in any position. However now that Evander is healthy will Buff be happy remaining in that forward position for the club?
Seto-Buff-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets face ultimate challenge against NHL’s No. 1 team. The Ducks have yet to lose in regulation at home. Do you think Jets can be the first to knock these Ducks off?

Winnipeg Sun: Are the Jets for real this time? We have seen this before from this franchise but the ultimate test is how they play on this trip. For me it isn’t even so much if they can win but more will they stick to their ‘style’ instead of matching whatever is thrown at them.

Winnipeg Sun: Trouba, Scheifele deserving of accolades. While they have taken different paths to success (Trouba early on, Scheifele of late) both have proven that they belong in the NHL without a doubt this season.

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice scrum from IcePlex. What from last week makes him confident in heading into the upcoming week? On Evander Kane’s availability (“He’s a playerâ€). Will Kane be back in his spot (With Scheifele & Wheeler*). Are the standings a true reflection? What does he like about Buff as a forward so far? What do you lose when you have Buff up front? Sheltering Trouba. O’Dell talk. Talking about the family trip that Jets are taking this week.

Ducks news:

Orange County Register: Ducks happy to put suitcases back in the closet. When you are undefeated in regulation at home there is no better place to be. (Article behind Paywall).

IceCaps news:

The Telegram: IceCaps bounce back in rubber match with Monarchs. Win, lose, win, lose and last night St. John’s beat a tough Manchester team.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets get the last quack. Nice to see the Jets not panic when they had a lead. They didn’t change their style and while they were clearly dominated by Anaheim throughout much of the game all that matters is walking out with two clean points.

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice a keeper, says guy who fired him — twice. Interesting to read what Maurice’s former GM had to say about the Jets bench boss.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets’ boss ‘very pleased’ with new head coach. Difficult to not be pleased when you see the results that he has achieved to date.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice holds key to Jets’ turnaround, Kane says. It is clear that the team has bought into whatever Maurice is selling.

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec gets mojo back. Part and parcel to this may be an improved commitment to defence from the team.

Winnipeg Sun: Ondrej the giant. Coach Maurice once rode Arturs Irbe for 72 games in a season and he won’t be afraid to ride whichever horse is able to maintain that pace he requires from this team. Ken’s article also talks about Al Montoya, Kane being able, Big production from Little and these Sharks have bite.
Pavelec-wm1-300x200.jpg

Winnipeg Sun: Coach Paul Maurice’s confidence rubbing off on Jets. Difficult to fathom that this is the same team that underwent a five game losing streak before the start of the four game win streak. Coach Maurice has certainly said the right things to both the players and media in his short time behind the bench.

CTV News: Reborn Jets tie longest winning streak this season after coaching change. It has been quite a couple of weeks for these Winnipeg Jets. Some of the good things listed in this article.

San Jose Mercury News: Joe Pavelski becoming an elite scorer. He has been one of the hottest goal scorers in the NHL over the past couple of months and you can bet he will attract a lot of attention from the Jets tonight.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Sharks blank Jets. The Jets are still feeling positive about themselves and they will face a Toronto team that is licking their wounds following a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of the Stars last night.

Winnipeg Free Press: San Jose’s grand experiment. When the Jets had Buff in a more prominent role I could see him being satisfied but will the forcibly converted defenceman be happy as a 3rd line winger whose role hasn’t been too significant the past couple of games?
Buff-as-fwd-300x189.jpg
