Glad we got him signed. However, given the poor recent history we have with UFA signings and the clown show that is our pro scouting department I've gotta say my gut reaction is more nervousness than excitement

Leino, Moulson and Okposo made it to July 1 and were UFA. Leino, Moulson and Okposo were below-average skaters when the deals were signed.

This is much more like the ROR deal. Extend an already-owned property. That ROR deal looks pretty darned nice right now, even more so if we actually still had the player.

The RoR deal was for

A) A center
B) A player who could play in all situations (PP, EV, PK)

The Skinner Deal is for

A) A winger
B) A winger who needs to be coddled with High Ozone starts, can't play the PK and has never been particularly effective on the PP

The NHL Salary cap in 2016-17, when RoR's deal went into effect was 73M and 10.27% of the cap

Skinner's deal on a 83M salary cap is 10.8% of the cap

Skinner is no RoR. Not at all.

This is a desperate bad deal made by a desperate, bad team.

I don't hate the amount or the 8-year term, but the devil is in the details.

I hope this isn't set up similar to Okposo's deal that is essentially buyout proof. I really hope the team learned from that mistake and signing players into their 30s.

Marner is also a winger. What you reckon, hes gonna sign for 5mil cause of that? ROR and Skinner deals are comparable at time of signing. Both an ovepray with potential to turn ugly in the end and good for the start.

Sabres put themselves in the situation they had to make the deal to take one step forward. If they didn’t it would have been two steps backward.

The people who dislike this deal have simply
Forgotten the Sabres sole purpose

Ah yes, the goal is to win the stanley cup.

We got a career year out of jeff last year, let's see where led us to in the standings!

Wait, wait.....looks like we finished 20 points out of the playoffs.

Well, it's ok, surely he's lead OTHER teams into the playoffs! Let's look at his career numbers

Oh. 0 Playoff games played.

So, what's our purpose again? To overpay above average talent to help us...miss the playoffs?

If so

Horrible. If Buffalo has any other players break out in the future they are going to point to this contract and say pay me.

Dahlin getting 10+ in 2 seasons.

Buffalo hasn't even sniffed the playoffs yet and they surely have about 30 mill committed to 3 players going forward.

You get better by keeping good players, not letting them walk. This is a worse team without Jeff Skinner.

Shame on Jeff Skinner for not potting 60 more goals to make up for the fact that Botts has been abysmal at acquiring secondary scoring. We should've just let him go and signed 2 more Conor Sheary types who could easily pour in 20-25+ goals by playing with Eichel. Or we could just assume that all the Rochester kids will be ready to contribute even though we regularly stunt their development.

This is why we should have held out at 8x8. Now Skinners contract is the benchmark and things will get real ugly. What will Dahlin want, 12+?

Couple of things:

1 - I made a reference to Shrub a bit ago. Nice to see we’re in the same wavelength.

2 - You cannot call Skinner an “above average” talent. It’s just factually incorrect. His purpose is goal scoring, and he’s elite at that.

3 - if you’re going hyperbolic, Eichel, Reinhart, and Dahlin have a combined 0 playoff games and were part of some of the worst teams in franchise history. Should we ditch them?

The point is, the top line for 85% of the season was not the problem. The problem has been that there hasn’t been a 2nd line in years, and that the coaching system has been mite-level. By all accounts they’ve been addressing the latter; this signing is a big part on improvement of the former.

We have 4/6 of the top 6 at this point- Jack, Sam, Skinner, and Olofsson. There’s enough cap space to hypothetically sign Matt Duchene if they were able. We’re not Colorado with the cap, but we sure as hell aren’t Winnipeg, either.

Nope, Skinner is no O'Reilly... Skinner WANTS to play here, Skinner is a TEAM player who thrives on Eichel's wing, (which is handy on account of there's a big opening there currently...), Skinner also never said publicly in a pouty sad-sack interview that the Sabres "killed his love for hockey"...

F*ck the O'Reilly comparisons, what other 35-40G winger were you signing THIS YEAR for less than $10M Doak??? Marner/Panarin are both $10M+ guaranteed.

We’re not the first team to sign a star player to a contract that the rest of the league believes is obsurd and we won’t be the last. Onus is on skinner now to prove he’s worth it.

Something that is not often mentioned when talking about what Skinner brings to the team is his attitude and what he brings to the locker room/ ice.

Guy plays with emotion...something this team has been void of for years. He's positive, confident, light-hearted and shows it. He's also a dick and shows it.

I hated the guy for years...must say he has won me over tho.

I just hope there arent some brutal clauses attached that would prevent us from moving him in the last 2 years when things almost surely will be ugly as hell.

To look at things on the bright side. We would likely have to give up more today to acquire a similar player in a trade than we will have to pay in year 5-6 years to dump this contract on someone else.
