There's no such thing as rental+1 year. That +1 year is what makes him not a rental.

Petry is still signed next year so he isn't a short term asset. Trading a late 1st round pick for 2 seasons of an experienced top-4 D who can play as well as Petry is good value. Look at the Muzzin trade

Winnipeg needs D. You're not winning the cup with Beaulieu, Kulikov and Poolman being so high on your depth chart

Problem is we are not talking about a top 4 D. e are talking about an experience #2 D.
A late 1st will not get any team Petry. unless there's a big add.

The Jets are doing well this season despite losing Byfuglien and having an average roster on defense. Petry could shore up their blueline as he's reliable in every situation and can produce points. The Jets have just enough cap space to fit him in and would improve their chance at the cup.

if your top 4 includes mete, fleury and chariot youve basically already eliminated yourself from contention and might as well tank

No one said there was a player you build a team around.Someone with a lack of hockey knowledge call all those players scrubs.
Those players you listed are far from scrubs.
