a bigger kessel but with a less lethal shot
This would be the type of scouting report you would get if you read only player stats.
JVR seems to be playing a bit conserved and honestly, who would blame him? Every time he and his line's on the ice, there's a significant chance of there being a goal scored against.
Changing his play style by so much might mean that his game is being screwed over by having to account for his line mates' habits. On the other hand, his reluctance to cheat had brought out the strengths in his transitioning passing game. Accurate tape-to-tape passes to guys gaining speed without causing turnovers is an underrated skill.
Get a smarter center in Holland (who also likes to rush) and a guy capable of winning board battles and you have a nifty line that could provide safe depth scoring. This is the beauty in JVR's game that Kessel might not be able to emulate.
