In addition to Hobey Baker finalist Justin Schultz’s terrific year as the top scoring defenceman in US college, some other young Jackets achieved some career highlights this season:

Jason Zucker of the Denver Pioneers was named the WCHA Rookie of the Year in the NCAA, along with the WCHA Second All-Star team. His spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team follows the footsteps of fellow Jackets prospects Schultz (2010) and Patrick Wiercioch (2009).

Sean Lorenz of the Fighting Irish took CCHA Best Defensive Defenceman honours (NCAA).

Both Andrej Nestrasil (PEI) and Dave Labrecque (Shawinigan) managed to score at better than a point-per-game pace in their respective QMJHL playoff series. PEI was eliminated by Shawinigan in 5 games, only to lose a tough 7-game second-round series to Quebec.

Diminutive blueliner Steven Tarasuk made the ECHL All-Star Team as a rookie playing for the Kalamazoo Wings.

Defenceman Marc-Antoine Desnoyers was the youngest member of the CIS National Championship team from the University of New Brunswick. He also saw time in the ECHL and AHL this season.

Espoo Blues and Jere Sallinen took the Silver Medal in the SM-Liiga in Finland.

Constantin Braun’s Eisbaren Berlin side took their third DEL Championship in the last 4 years, along with the Euro Trophy title. The big swingman played a key blueline role. With luck he’ll come over to Manchester next season.

… and of course Blake Geoffrion’s Nashville Predators are down 1 game in the NHL Western Conference Semi Finals versus Vancouver. Geoffrion has two assists in 7 games playing limited minutes, but hey – he’s a rookie playing in the NHL post-season – I’ll take it!
