Him and Pesce have been pleasant surprises this year. Assuming they can maintain this level of play, they could round out a top-4 with Faulk and Hanifin.

Best thing about Slavin is he's just tapping in to what he's going to be capable of at the NHL level. He's still keeping things simple.

About two years ago he basically exploded onto the scene out of nowhere at the NCAA level and led Colorado College in scoring as a true freshman dman, which is unheard of at a program like that though CC seems to be on the downswing in recent years.

As I'm sure you could tell last night, his skating is very strong for a guy with his kind of frame. And the offensive style he showed on a consistent basis at the NCAA level is very easily transferable to the NHL level. As he starts to get more comfortable playing this system he'll start to open up his game a bit more in that regard. Though he doesn't have a cannon of a shot like either Faulk or Murphy do from our blueline so he'll never be the primary triggerman threat on our of our PP units here.

I think he's for sure a top 4 caliber dman in terms of upside and MAYBE even top pairing upside, though he won't have the opportunity to hit the high end of that here with Hanifin and Fleury also being on his side. And while he is also comfortable on the off side, where he was used very effectively by the US WJC team a couple years back, he has Faulk in his way there.

Isn't this more suitable on canes board? I don't think they mind if you ask some questions over there.

Just a side question. How has Ryan Murphy looked this year?

I am a Kitchener Rangers season ticket holder and he was just dominant offensively in the OHL. He was weak defensively but I figured that his offensive game would have led him to be a #5/6 with a lot of power play time.

He has been decent, amazing skater with a very good shot, he just seems to be the odd man out. We have other defensemen who are almost as comparable on offense, but vastly superior on defense.

Would love if we could flip him for a compareable forward prospect.

He got concussed and then lost what would have been his roster spot on-account of Pesce and Slavin exceeding everybody's expectations so he got sent back to the AHL again. He's grown to be mediocre defensively actually...but he's just blocked by our depth. He's pretty dominant at that level too...and he doesn't look bad when he gets play in Carolina, but he's probably trade-fodder.

Too many defensemen, not enough minutes or roster spots to go around.

What BB said. It's been fun to finally see some competent defensive prospects work out for us for a change.

I said last year that I thought he was the Canes best D-prospect outside of Hanifin/Fleury. He has some good offensive upside, but is keeping things simple for now. It is amazing that all three Canes rookie d-men get trust heaped upon them in critical game situations.

Hanifin, Fleury, Slavin, Pesce, are all 21 and under, 6'3" 200lb+ dmen that have great skating ability and can move the puck. Plus the veteran all-star 23 year old Faulk.

I feel like I've learned my lesson with young defensemen. The Whalers/Canes franchise seems to carry some sort of curse when it comes to dmen. I didn't buy the Slavin hype last year or in training camp. I mean he's a really green 4th-rounder, c'mon. Hell, I'm still not even completely sold on Pesce and he's actually shown something in the NHL.

But I'm sold on Slavin. Maybe he turns out to be a star, I don't know about all that, but he's definitely a regular NHL defenseman today and he's got all the tools for a long and successful career in the top-4. The frame is there, the skills are there, the intensity is there, and he "gets" the position. He's gonna have a good career.

Oh, and it should be said that Steve Smith is the defensemen coach who's currently overseeing a breakout season from Faulk, a solid debut season from Hanifin, unexpected breakouts from Pesce and Slavin, AND respectable play from the castoffs Hainsey and Liles.

Jaccob Slavin needs more talk. I'm not even a Canes fan but every time I watch him, it's like he can do almost no wrong.

He thinks the game far ahead of other players, his stick work is elite, his gap control is top notch, he's strong and sizeable, and he's a pretty good skater. Good in transition too. He's also extremely dedicated and a truly genuine fellow.

He has offensive skills that he hasn't tapped into at this level but it's probably only a matter of time. Either way, extremely effective player and I'm happy he's on Carolina. That defense is bound to be Nashville-esque soon.

I think he's pretty good but that collapse and the snow angle brought him back down to earth for me, Jets would take him for sure though.

He does everything well and looks so effortless doing it. I kinda hate saying this, because I know people will freak out, but he reminds me of Nick Lidstrom a little bit. He's 22 years old and appears to be the smartest guy on the ice most nights.

As a Canes fan he's hands down the best "defensive" defender on the team. Like you said his stick work/gap control is unbelievable. Anyone that hasn't watched him yet, watch him on the PK where his skill set just seems to shine.

I'd still say Faulk is our top overall guy. But give it another season or two and I think Slavin might just be the best of the bunch. Better than Hanifin and better than Faulk.

I'm not sure I'd use one play like that to make judgements off of. He honestly didn't do much wrong there, just lost his balance a bit trying to get his stick out.

Slavin is an incredibly smart defenseman. Rarely does anything stupid, keeps it simple for the most part, which makes it tough for the opponent to generate offense when he's out there. He's already a legit top pairing defensmen in my eyes with underrated offensive ability - he probably has the best first pass on the Canes.

This might sound crazy, but he honestly has a lot of Lidstrom in his game. Calm, composed, intelligent player. He's going to be a good player for a long time, it wouldn't shock me if he is one day contending for a Norris trophy, he's got that kind of potential.

Somehow I've watched every Canes game so far. The thing about Slavin that has really impressed me so far is his physical presence. At least once a game he really punishes someone. That forearm that he gave Gaudreau the other night was awesome.

Really that whole team is fun to watch, can't hold a lead, but that should improve soon.

While I agree with the sentiment, people get skewered for one play around here all the time.

In terms of dismissing this as just losing his balance, though, I think is sweeping it under the rug.

This must have been at the end of a long shift and he was gassed, because he makes a few poor decisions in a short timeframe. But then again he wasn't alone. Got stuck tracking Scheifele who went behind the net which opened up the passing lane through the slot. Then panics and overcommits to play the shot which opens up the lane to the top of the crease.

So while this could be an anomaly, there's enough blame for him to shoulder besides just falling down.
