Most players from the NTDP don't play in the tournament and they take the best outside, although they do skip some good CHL players from time to time as well for whatever reason.

I dont really know why, but we never send the USNDTP kids to this one. As it turns out, I like it though. We get to see some new kids (every year, our WJC team has some kids who played in Hlinka) and more importantly to me, it gives a real chance to gauge our growth, in terms of depth. I always feel good when we medal here with a true B team.

I think Canadians feel the same way about the April u-18 championship.

Haven't really followed this age group from Finland that closely but I'd assume the roster will look something like this, based on this camp roster from June

Justus Annunen
Kalle Nurmi

Toni Utunen - Miska Kukkonen
Santeri Salmela - Mikko Kokkonen
Peetro Seppälä - Anttoni Honka
Iivari Räsänen - Kim Nousiainen

Matias Maccelli - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Rasmus Kupari
Lenni Killinen - Kristian Tanus - Niklas Nordgren
Kaapo Kakko - Henri Nikkanen - Arttu Nevasaari
Samuel Salonen - Jesse Moilanen - Eetu Mäki
Sampo Ranta

From what I understand, USA is the only country that isn't bringing their best to this tournament. Otherwise every one else does. Could be wrong.
Pretty sure it's a more competitive tournament then the April championship too.(CHL playoffs). Many players from all countries usually missing. It's off season now.

Right but there are some good players that are in their draft year that are at the World Junior Summer Showcase also. I think that conflicts with the Hlinka this year. Could be wrong though

With the exception of several nordic teams, especially Finland, the two selections are the best.

Is this the tournament where Canada sends its best U-18 players while no one else does?

As far as I know, Canada sends a B-squad to the IIHF U-18 in the spring and then sends its top players to this event, while the reverse is generally true for everyone else.

Probably. Both should be on top 6 wingers on this team.

I'm not sure but i think the reason why Nordgren isn't Hlinka tournament team is that HIFK isn't released him.

Nordgren signed 4 yrs liiga contract with liiga HIFK this spring.
That's not a secret HIFK needs more forwards so i think HIFK's head coach Ari-Pekka Selin wants to take a look how Nordgren doing against pro players.

Other countries send good teams, I'm not to keen on the best of the best Swedish and Finnish prospects, they'll have just a couple that are playing at the U20 level at the Summer Showcase the rest of the week (Dahlin). But yeah Canada usually sends its best available to this one. This is a great tournament.

As far as the U.S. we don't send our NTDP although there are two players on this years group that was with the U17 team last year. I'll say this though, our "B" team can compete in this event now, we have done well over the past couple of years and made the final last year getting Silver. It speaks to the overall development and it's good to see, we need to get to the level where we can send this group and we can hold our own, just like Canada could as well. We'll see how it pans out, but every year I still have Canada as the overall favorites entering the tournament.
