No. These players were power forwards (for example): Cam Neely, Keith Tkachuk, Eric Lindros, Rick Tocchet, Kevin Stevens, Gordie Howe, Wendel Clark. There hasnt been a true power forward in the league in ages (and Ovi isnt one).

Mikko Rantanen is a modern power forward in my book.

Power Forward today = anyone 6"4 and over who plays in the top 6.

If power forward means modern day power forward like J.Benn, W.Simmonds, B.Wheeler, then yes. I would consider his playing style to be something like modern power forward. But if it means guys like Neely, Iginla, Tkachuck, Lindros, Clark etc. then I would not consider Hertl as a power forward.

Benn and Simmonds play a fairly legit power forward style of game. Hertl doesnt. Blake Wheeler is a big forward with no mean streak, same with Hertl.

Lucic in his prime maybe. Benn has never been a true power forward. Solid and physical player yes, but not power forward. Perry and Backes are absolute jokes imo.

I don’t think “mean streak” should not be included with the definition of a modern powerforward. There aren’t really any guys like that anymore.

What I do know is that Hertl uses his body to dominate other players during play while he has the puck better than anyone in the league. He doesn’t throw huge open ice hits or start fights, but he is as physically dominant as anyone in this league. He’s incredibly strong and just shoved defenders off himself with ease.

There are still guys like that though. A few have already been listed in here. Modern power forward is a pretty lame term, it basically means youre 6'2 plus and protect the puck well. Cool, every team has 3 power forwards then.

And really you can call guys a new age power forward or a modern one all you want I guess and I dont mind it, but people should make sure they say new age power forward and not power forward. If this thread said is Hertl a new age power forward it would've had ten replies. The issue is people think hes a legit power forward which just isnt true

AO is definitely a power forward in this day and age in the NHL.

LOL at whoever said you need to fight to be considered a power forward.

How exactly has Benn never been a true forward?

Okay, I have maybe mellowed and would probably include Benn, but hes low-end in terms of power fordwards. The most important things for me are scoring and intimidation factor (They had to be good fighters). The absolute best power forward was Lindros imo. Sad his career was too short.
