Is the summer the time to finally dump Spezza!

The Senators have gone 15-18-6 with Spezza playing this season and are 3-0-1 without him (as of jan 3).

Including last season, when he was sidelined with back problems, the Senators have a record of 18-19-8 when he plays and have gone 25-16-4 when he’s out. - See more at: http://www.senatorsextra.com/main/to-play-or-not-to-play-spezza#sthash.lik5tx9d.dpuf

To me, it's pretty obvious that he has some nice games at the end of the season when the games don't count, otherwise he can't figure out how to play a complete game.

He's a great pp specialist but with a really tight payroll shouldn't his money be best spend on a goalie or defencemen?

Ahh there is no more polarizing topic with Sens fans than the importance of Jason Spezza.

I wouldn't trade him unless the return was an overpayment. Despite his short comings we are a worse team without him.

There is actually no evidence of this, which is troubling.

No...this summer is too late. We need to focus on building a time machine so we can go back several weeks before the last trade deadline...

Spezza has been the teams best player the past month. I think this past bunch of games is more like what Spezza will normally bring then the first 3/4s of the season where he seemed to still be finding his game and legs after the injury and time away from the game.

That being said, I think Murray needs to sit down and discuss a contract. If they can't come to terms on a fair deal for both sides, it's time to trade him. No sense letting him walk for nothing.

I think the team is better with him then anything they could get for him, but a decision is going to need to be made. Are the Sens going to try to make a run in the next 2 to 3 years, or are they going to keep rebuilding?

I would trade him, but from an asset-management POV, not because of meaningless records with/without him.

He's been much better lately.

Only trade him if you can get a top 4 defenseman + top prospect + 1st in return. Turris is not ready for #1 center duties, and Zibanejad is still very raw, needs more time to develop.

Wasn't Turris the #1 centre on this team last yr when they actually did make the playoffs & hasn't he been the #1 centre for most of this yr while Spezza has been playing crappy while recuperating from a bad back & knee operation & waiting for BM to find a forward for him to play with?

I think I am ready to cut ties with Spezza. I was all for him getting the captaincy but man, this team has looked devoid of any sort of leadership all season and it's not like he's putting up huge numbers. Phillips just got rewarded for nothing though so I expect Murray will be giving Spez an extension as well

4.0 salary
7.0 cap hit

That's three million dollars Melnyk saves at the floor.

Spezza salary keeps him a Sen

Reasons to trade Spezza:

He isn't a winner and never will be. His play style and effort is for losers. I like winning. Keeping him wont allow winning to happen.

He's injury prone and has a bad back. Could be an injury away from being done.

1 season away from being a UFA. Considering his age and injuries, he should not be signed longterm. 3 years Max.

Good excuse to remove the C from him. Horrible captain.

The return will most likely be better for the Sens longterm.

Reasons to keep Spezza:

He's still a top 6 player.

He may not get a good return / Will any team actually want him?

Reasons to trade Spezza outweigh reasons to keep Spezza.
