The other thing is...Vegas, Boston, and Carolina all have extremely deep defence groups full of big minute horses that put goalies in the best possible spot to succeed. It's very easy to say "just get a super deep elite defence corps and then you don't need a #1 goalie" but that's easier said than done.

Bingo.

I would say paying for a goaltender ten mil a season rarely pays off if you have decent defense already. So, I'd say tandem goaltending is ON.

I think you’re gonna see body modification that makes goaltending easier. Like, just plastic drapings hung under the arms, bat style. Or a literal tandem goalie- genetic modification is, like, 10 years out from making that dude from mortal kombat, but instead of 4 arms it’s 4 legs and 2 torsos merging into a cyclops.

I’m sorry, what were we talking about?

It'll turn into baseball where every team has 5 starting goalies in the rotation and a bunch of other guys to come in in the 3rd period.

With this, you'll unlikely to see anymore goalies to reach 1,000 games played.

Given they usually don't come in until they're 21, 22. Likely won't be the number 1 for another 2 years, maybe 3.

I say yes, the Blues were ahead of the game in the early 2010’s
They kind of stumbled into that Halak/Elliott tandem. Halak was suppose to be their guy but wasn’t good enough to be in the roll other starting goalies were playing at the time and Elliott was signed as a cheap replacement level backup and revamped his career under Hitchcock.

If last year is any indication, I'd say quad goaltending is the way of the future. Use 4 NHL goalies on your roster to win the cup.

It does seem that way. The league has been trying its best to get the clutch and grab way to play defence out and the speed of the game is at an all time high. Shots are plentiful so it does make sense to give goalies some more rest and less games.

I think this trend has already been going on for quite some time.

Nobody plays 70 plus games anymore , and even 60 plus games is exceptionally rare these days.

It was certainly the way of a portion of the past. The 21-team era saw everyone play two goalies. A number of teams had two great goalies.

Yep. Tandem goaltending isn't just the way of the future. It's the way of the present.
