Why the NHL's foray into sports betting may finally mean more specific injury disclosure

Paywall.

A little history as to how we got to where things are circa 2021 and the potential impacts of sports betting on more illuminating disclosures.

While there is something to be said for not identifying the location of an injury so opponents don't target the area, will guys be out a little longer to more fully heal before returning?
It's a big deal in the NFL. They even report on whether a player practices or is limited in practice during the week.

Who knows about the NHL. Maybe they just do LBI or UPI while the player is injured, but before he returns, the team must disclose what the injury was so that gamblers have more information before placing their bets.

@StreetHawk but will the league give a better estimate of how long a player will be out?
They likely would not want to, but if they had to in order to receive the gambling money, they would.

But, in Vancouver, we've heard Pettersson was supposed to be out day to day, then week to week. But, he's ended up missing half the season now and has been shut down with a wrist injury.

So, I don't know if that does anything to the games that the player misses.

I do think it's important to know what the injury was that the player is returning from. Not just for the results of the game, but there are a lot of prop bets now on player performance.
